Sergio Martino is a well-known rip-off artist, and his rip-offs were of high quality at the time. For example, ‘Crocodile Killer River’, filmed in the wake of the success of ‘Jaws’ and using the same clichés, turned out to be quite enjoyable, even though the crocodile had little screen time, and ‘The Island of the Fish People’ repeats the 1977 film adaptation of ' The Island of Dr. Moreau' from 1977, but nevertheless atmospheric and even a little scary. ‘2019: After the Fall of New York’ absorbed a little bit from various post-apocalyptic films that were popular at the time. The film is often called a rip-off of Carpenter's Escape from New York because, in this film, the hero must also make his way into dangerous New York and successfully escape from there. But Carpenter's film is not the only influence here. There are races and gladiatorial battles in cars covered with metal, clearly inspired by Roger Corman's Death Race 3000 with Stallone, and a tribe of ape-like people, some of whom resemble the apes from Planet of the Apes. And then there are the sewer scenes, piles of rats, soldiers riding horses, a bit of gore, a fight with a cyborg, and even a space flight at the end. In short, it's a hodgepodge of various post-apocalyptic and futuristic films. And that's a plus — such dizzying diversity keeps you from getting bored. Of course, it's all naive and predictable—the heroes, tough as nails, defeat a legion of enemy soldiers, while the latter display stupidity, waving their weapons around without firing, and just as deftly avoid the spikes placed on the road. But these clichés somehow add charm to the film as a “second-tier” action movie from the 1980s.
The miniatures are extremely unrealistic, as are the weapons and shiny spikes on the road, but it is worth remembering that the Italians and French had far fewer resources than the big American studios. Nevertheless, the creators got around this by using warehouses and dumps as locations, which did not require any special expenses and were perfectly suited to the post-apocalyptic setting. The creators deserve high marks for their ingenuity and good use of what was at hand. Good, colorful supporting characters add to the pleasant impression, and American Michael Sopikov had three more similar films ahead of him.
'2019: After the Fall of New York' is a naive but dynamic and entertaining post-apocalyptic action film that incorporates a little bit of everything from its counterparts. Fans of this genre should enjoy it.
