You know how it is with men? There's this thing you're most invested in, your life's work, and it comes first. The hero of this film, Tucker, gives tours along the coast, showing tourists sharks, making fishing gear, shooting amateur videos...
It was simply delightful! I haven't seen such a good horror film in recent years. The narrative structure is borrowed from the best examples of the genre, and its external presentation looks modern and fresh. The film is not vulgar at all, with few scenes that are truly physically frightening.
In the first half hour, we can't even determine who the antagonist of the film really is — the morally strong newcomer, the smarter girl, the strange man, or the local young man who is as fit as an Olympic athlete. The pace of the narrative is perfect—there is no excessive speed or lulls, you will not be bored, and you will have time to think, assess the situation, and empathize. The story gradually expands, and the script takes on new colors. Between the chilling scenes, there is room for quite good dialogues with a philosophical context, and these are not the clichéd delusional ideas of some maniacs. Every word fits into the context of the narrative!
There are no stupid characters whose actions make you want to facepalm. There are no stupid dialogues. There are no clichés of films with strong female characters: the men here are not repulsive, and there is no politics to be seen while watching. There are no unclear plot twists like “a piano in the bushes.” Instead, there is almost constant tension, exciting scenes, well-developed characters, and even a hint of a romantic plot.
It seems as if the creators watched more or less all the horror films of the last 15 years, removed all the nonsense, added some spice, seasoned it with dialogue, supplemented it with original locations...
And everything described fits very harmoniously into the running time and plot. In a perfect work, nothing can be taken away and nothing can be added - and that's the case here.
And what a disgusting title for such a successful film. You can watch the waves, yes. The ocean and the waves, the beautiful views.
