Tea house. Bandits are quietly drinking tea and chatting about this and that. Suddenly, the doors burst open and Chow Yun-Fat rushes into the house with two pistols and a toothpick in his teeth. And then the beating begins, so intense that all Western action stars start crying hysterically, covering their faces with their hands and occasionally squealing and asking for their mothers.
The thing about the action scenes is that they are ridiculously detailed. The human eye is simply unable to comprehend everything that is happening: bullets are whizzing, blood is flowing like a river, everything around is exploding into pieces, and the walls are crumbling. Plus, John Woo's famous “weapon choreography” is in full swing here. The heroes don't just stand and shoot — they are constantly moving, tumbling, jumping out of windows, sliding down railings, and performing other such artistic feats.
The final battle is a spectacular battle in which the number of corpses seems to exceed a hundred. But the real highlight of the film is undoubtedly the mind-blowing three-minute scene in which the heroes rush down a corridor, sweeping away everything in their path, filmed in one take without any editing - in one piece. Simply superb.
The plot is formulaic and predictable (which is to be expected, given that the script was written three weeks before filming). Nevertheless, it manages to delight with a couple of extremely spectacular moments, but for the most part it serves as a backdrop for crazy shootouts.
