A series of brutal murders has left the entire city of Turin frozen in horror. It seems that an elusive serial killer nicknamed Gnome, who disappeared without a trace 17 years ago, has reappeared in the city. Singing nursery rhymes and leaving scraps of paper with puzzles next to the corpses, he destroys one victim after another, cleverly deceiving police detectives equipped with the most modern technical means. Only one man, retired police commissioner Moretti, who knows all the details of that old case, is willing to make any sacrifice to put an end to the killer once and for all.

If there were a Mount Rushmore dedicated to masters of horror and thriller, Dario Argento's star would undoubtedly take its rightful place alongside the bas-reliefs of Alfred Hitchcock, Mario Bava, John Carpenter, and others. This is because Argento has his own unique way of conveying the mystical and terrifying, transcribing the world of the otherworldly and the superconscious in his own way.

But even a super-accurate shooter can miss, and a virtuoso singer can hit a wrong note. Something similar happened to Argento in Sleepless. It really doesn't take long to lose sleep trying to figure out what's wrong! An interesting plot, colorful actors, an oppressive atmosphere of fear and persecution. As they say, all the cards are in your hands. But the deadly puzzle is solved with decreasing momentum, like an athlete who is increasingly exhausted as he approaches the finish line. Talented actors work intermittently and reluctantly, as if they really hadn't slept for four days. Perhaps the reason is the language barrier. The Italian cast is forced to perform in English. The brutal murders, instead of horrifying the viewer, leave them in a state of shock. It's fine if the great director was aiming for this effect. Particularly memorable is the moment when the eyes of a severed, obviously fake head blink very expressively. And one can only marvel at the maniac's ability to manually, without any special tools, separate a living person's head from their torso, and keep it suspended in the air!

The most spectacular moment in the film is its somewhat drawn-out beginning. Especially when a night butterfly with the appearance of a transvestite stylishly and gracefully runs away from her dissatisfied client who is chasing her. The creators apparently intuitively understood that “a good start is half the battle” and placed Barbara Lerici's expressive face on the main poster for the film.

The main thing that delights throughout the film is the music. It conveys everything that the screenwriters, actors, makeup artists, and other members of the film crew, led by Argento, wanted to convey to the audience. Pain, despair, suspense, wild fear, animal cruelty, madness, and mystery. He who has ears, let him hear.

Overall, Sleepless has absolutely everything to keep the viewer glued to the screen and only tear themselves away with difficulty during the final credits. But minor flaws, like a speck of dust in the eye, prevent you from enjoying this dark story. Either it's the script, which has been eaten away by mice in places, causing the actors to resort to inappropriate improvisation. Or it's the genre drift: from detective to erotic thriller to classic horror film. As a result, Non ho sonno is a kind of semi-genre by-product that you want to bring to full readiness before consuming.
