I have always been fascinated by stories where the hero finds himself trapped in a confined space. Whether it's a phone booth (Phone Booth), a coffin (Buried Alive), or a car (Lock), these stories make the viewer feel claustrophobic and uncomfortable with what's happening on screen.
David Yarovetsky's new project, Locked, produced by Sam Raimi, continues this tradition by placing the hero in a black SUV. Elon Musk has something to learn from this film.
The plot seems simple: con artist Eddie (Anton Shastun, oh!
Bill Skarsgård, whose eyes reflect all the manic anguish of a man whose life resembles an endless bad Monday) steals cars in an acid-pink hoodie. Desperate, Eddie is given a “chance” by fate — an abandoned SUV in a deserted parking lot. But as soon as he steps inside, the car turns into a cage. The doors are locked, the windows are bulletproof, and the car's owner, William (Anthony Hopkins), who plays God (or Satan?), suddenly appears on the phone. His goal is not just to punish the thief, but to make him “feel the pain” that crime has brought into his life.
The first half hour is brilliant. It's like watching another installment of Saw, only without the bloody carnage, but with philosophical undertones. Skarsgård and Hopkins give it their all. Eddie gradually loses his human form, turning into a hunted animal, while William, behind a mask of calm, hides the fury of a man who has lost everything. Their telephone conversations are a philosophical dialogue about the nature of evil. When William activates the “remote control” and sends the car on a hellish journey, the thriller takes a new turn. There are political allusions and reflections on social inequality, but most importantly, there is a primal fear of being trapped by one's own mistakes.
But Locked loses its grip closer to the finale, when the script tries to cram in a spectacular Hollywood denouement. It's a shame — the dark intimacy and psychological harshness of the first half of the film are much more interesting. But even with this dissonance, the film will be remembered as an experiment in which two acting giants turn a banal plot into a parable about the price of sins and the mercilessness of retribution.
If you appreciate tense character duels and are willing to put up with a formulaic ending for the sake of Skarsgård and Hopkins' brilliant performances, Locked is worth your time. The claustrophobic atmosphere here is top-notch.
