Five college graduates head to a remote forest cabin to have some fun before entering the workforce. But their vacation is overshadowed by the deadly intrusion of a stranger covered in bloody scabs. Fearing infection, the friends open fire, but the “leper” escapes, managing to infect a girl with a virus that destroys human flesh. The guys lock their friend in the cabin and rush into the forest, overcome by wild fear and uncertainty about who will be the next victim...

User Review

Eli Roth was young and passionate, much like I was when I first inserted the Cabin Fever cassette into the tape player. So, in addition to filming a typical story about young people who find themselves stranded in the wilderness, Eli also managed to poke fun at the horror clichés of the past twenty years. But first things first.

It all starts as a typical story of students getting drunk, but as the warm Canadian twilight approaches, the story becomes overgrown with the miasma of rotten flesh, and the degree of hopelessness increases... along with the degree of black humor.

Roth worked hard on the blatant idiocy, and it's clear that shooting a “typical horror movie” was not part of his plans at all. Eli stuffed the film with subplots, which is why the story itself, with its forest disease, doesn't get boring, but looks even more intense. The characters naturally try to survive, but, faced with their own inability to communicate, they find themselves in situations that do not bode well for them. Add to this the fact that there is a forest wilderness, a virus, and the kindest (not) rednecks, and the plot will take you deep into a bloody haze.

I was pleased with the nature, enticing with its yellow shades of pus, and even more pleased with the canonical rednecks, the pot-smoking sheriff, and of course Eli Roth, who with his appearance naturally embodied the concept of the “noughties,” at least for me. That's how it is.

I find it difficult to view Cabin Fever as a cheap horror movie or treat it as Roth's debut experiment. For me, it's more of a nostalgic hit, a kind of supplement to my youth, the noughties, and everything that happened in that decade. That's why the sight of rotting vacationers, absurd dialogue, and pleas for help, coupled with the sight of young people spitting out their insides, resonates with pure joy. No matter how you look at it, Eli knew what period he was working in, which is why he made a cult classic for those in the know.
