A couple heads out to an extravagant cabin in the woods, owned by the boyfriend, for a weekend getaway. Things start off perfectly--there's a gift cake from the cleaner, a romantic dinner--but when the boyfriend's cousin unexpectedly stops by, the atmosphere shifts. As the weekend unravels, the girlfriend begins to wonder if everything is really as it seems.

User Review

A decent classic mystical novella that could have been better.

Osgood Perkins works tirelessly, releasing his second film of the year. And why not, when the films are small and made on a shoestring budget? The 1.5-hour rule is not broken, so the genre seems to be safe. However, Keeper is still weaker than The Soul Collector (another hit from the localizers) and Monkey.

On the one hand, the director deserves credit for shooting different things. Here, he did not repeat himself, because the film is made in a slightly different style than Crip-Cage, although there are some small visual tricks, and it is certainly different from The Monkey.

It's a classic, intimate mystical horror thriller with a fairly simple plot (they don't even try to hide anything from the viewer, because you can easily guess what's going on right from the start) set in a house and the surrounding nature, a kind of theatrical thriller for two (okay, four, but basically two). Fortunately, the director does not resort to cheap screamers, and we are very grateful to him for that. As usual, he builds tension with atmosphere, suspense, and sound design—in other words, he does the job right, rather than just making kids scream in the theater. However, in places the suspense weakens and the film becomes a little boring - there is a slight imbalance.

Everything is filmed, albeit simply, but it is pleasing to the eye. Good color grading, solid work with color and light, decent cinematography, though not particularly fancy, unlike in Soul Collector, and pleasant outdoor shots. The sound, I repeat, is also excellent—all those footsteps, creaks, and noises—everything works to achieve the desired result.

There are two actors here, and one prima donna—Tatiana Maslany. And she is the one who carries a lot of the weight. She may not have to play Anna Karenina here, but Tatiana has plenty of charisma and talent, and she delivers even in such a genre trifle. Watching her is a pure pleasure.

Overall, the film is traditional and, on the whole, watchable and not bad. Hardcore fans of the genre will most likely be disappointed, but those who can pass the evening with an entertaining mystical thriller-horror will not leave particularly offended. Yes, it's not a masterpiece, but it's made by a pro. It's a decent example of the genre with a proper ending. If the directing had been a little tighter, it could have been a minor hit. I don't regret watching it. It's like an episode of Tales from the Crypt in terms of structure. It seems trivial, but it's enjoyable.
