I just read an article here about the director: apparently, a YouTuber raised funds for the project and, with the support of his more established and renowned colleagues, shot his debut film—which is basically an homage to popular horror movies, inspired by *Reincarnation* and all that... Honestly, that’s about it.

My doubts started when the names of those very “renowned colleagues” were revealed. With the exception of Flanagan, who made some decent horror films early in his career and—as is now obvious—accidentally directed my favorite horror series, The Haunting of Hill House, the rest of the horror filmmakers were mostly churning out mass-market fare. And Shyamalan, as an inspiration, was also present here. Even if not explicitly, his shadow still loomed over it, whether you like it or not.
The second red flag was the use of mixed techniques. As far as I’m concerned, if you’re going to shoot a mockumentary or “found footage,” you should go all the way. The beginning of the film really piqued my interest, and I hoped that the interweaving of different cinematic styles would be used sparingly, complementing and alternating with one another over and over. But no, the mockumentary part ends rather quickly and doesn’t return, which, for me as a fan of the genre, was a disappointment.

It would all be fine, but the end result isn’t a “Frankenstein” of homages, but rather a “Frankenstein” of clichés. Nothing new—we’ve seen it all a million times. Plot devices, twists, old-school jump scares, and idiotic final shots.

Personally, I find the film’s “homage” status highly questionable. It’s similar to *Reincarnation* because... And to *Rosemary’s Baby* because... And to *The Blair Witch Project* because of this. I won’t say it outright so this review actually gets published, but I’ll give an identical example: I look exactly like Ari Aster... because he wears glasses and has two arms. And he also has a nose.

The parallel with the Phillips brothers begins and ends with YouTube. That’s it! In this case, the brothers are simply an unattainable peak for the author of ‘Shelby Oaks’.

I don’t know if the renowned ‘assistants’ are to blame for this sad outcome or if Chris Stackmann just isn’t my kind of director, but it’s a real shame it turned out this way. Considering how few good horror mockumentaries there are in general. I won’t complain that there are few good horror movies overall... So be it. Let there be fewer of them. It just means a shift from quantity to quality.
