The Mountain of the Cannibal God 4K 1978 Ultra HD 2160p
Susan Stevenson and her brother Arthur get off a plane in Papua New Guinea, looking for her missing husband. They team up with Dr. Edward Foster. The three head into the jungle, get into more than a few fights among themselves, and view lots of gratuitous animal cruelty, notably an iguana getting eviscerated.
User Review
Having made (earned) a name for himself, Sergio Martino could rightly expect more substantial budgets for his projects, and the state of the film market would dictate what they would be about. At that time, cannibals were in vogue.
After studying the works of his colleagues, Martino produced a film that mixed eroticism, adventure, and horror. There are about 15 minutes of horror on screen, most of which is “off topic” - scenes of animal destruction (not without the help of the film crew), although Martino claimed that it was all filmed accidentally, but the film shows evidence to the contrary.
If you remove all the horror, the film looks very decent, with the exception of the savages' orgies.
The beautiful nature of Sri Lanka, famous and beautiful actors (Ursula Andress is delightful), an almost adequate plot, and adventure cinema.
But combining several genres into one did not result in anything meaningful.
Martino does not know how to film cannibals, copying some scenes (most, if not all) from his colleagues and saving money on extras. The locals, playing cannibals, are ridiculous and civilized (the women have manicures), with sloppily applied makeup and wigs, and there is a dwarf cannibal in the tribe, which is also original and funny in its own way.
Overall, it's a dreary and boring spectacle. For most of the film, the characters are going somewhere, and at the very end of the story, there is a denouement that confuses the viewer even more.
