Eaten Alive! 4K 1980 Ultra HD 2160p
One of the less gruesome cannibal tales. A woman is searching for her missing sister and she finds hope in the folly of a dead hit-man who has a film on him. The film shows some sadistic torture and a brief cameo by her sister taken by a documentary film crew who obviously didn't make it out. She then leaves for the jungle joined by cannibal film regular Robert Kerman (playing Mark Butler), where they meet up with the standard Cannibal tribe and a Jim Jones like cult leader. Of course escape is next to impossible with the always-hungry cannibals waiting them out and the crazy followers of the suicide cult leader ready to eat them on command.

Although Umberto Lenzi was ahead of Deodato in developing the ‘cannibal’ theme, unfortunately, with his ‘The Man from Deep River’, he never became a leader. And yet the film turned out to be great. Now, against the backdrop of Deodato's triumph, when every self-respecting Italian exploitation director was making films about cannibals, Lenci was more likely trying to “ride the wave” of his colleague's success. That's how I feel about his two ‘cannibal’ films, shot in 1980 and 1981. By the way, they are successful and quite decent films.
This film mixes ‘cannibal’ aesthetics with the theme of totalitarian sects. Just imagine: a rich girl and her guide set off into the depths of Guinea. She is looking for her sister, and the guide has been promised a lot of money. Soon they find her. The sister is in a very strange sect, from which it is almost impossible to escape - a tribe of cannibals lives in the jungle. So, despite the original plot, the storyline of ‘Cannibal Holocaust’ remains intact.
The classic conflict of civilizations for this subgenre is also observed here. The film begins with modern civilization - then the heroes set off into the wilderness. There they will encounter savages and become imbued with violence. At first, the victims are animals, but soon it is people. The final bow is entirely in Deodato's style - correlating the theme of cannibalism in primitive tribes with violence in modern society.
So, here you have an exciting adventure film that you can watch and be horrified by some of the naturalistic scenes. The film lacks the elegance of Deodato's pictures, but it is quite exotic and fully corresponds to the genre. Mi Mi Lai and Ivan Rassimov are additional bonuses. I like them.
