An artist (Lipscomb), who made an unsuccessful suicide attempt (he survived), is possessed by the spirit of a man who was brutally murdered at the exact same time. The spirit compels him to find the killers and take revenge in an equally brutal manner. The artist is terrified by these nightmares, as he realizes that what he is doing is not just a dream. His sympathetic psychiatrist tries to help him. American critic Leonard Maltin panned the film, but I liked it.

This is the first feature film by Guy Magar, who has spent his entire career working on various genre series—ranging from sci-fi action shows to straightforward action series. He also co-wrote the screenplay for this film. The dark synth score was composed by John Carpenter’s friend and collaborator, Alan Howard. Among those responsible for the realistic effects was Kevin Yager, creator of the legendary Chucky doll and the makeup and prosthetics for John McNaughton’s excellent film *The Alien in a Strange Body*.

Here, Magar emerges as an incredibly strong and experienced director, delivering two intertwining storylines in completely different styles. The storyline of the main character, the artist, is in the spirit of a comedy-drama, while the storyline of the criminal spirit that has possessed him is in the style of a hyper-realistic revenge thriller.

This eccentric dynamic of the film—where you’re plunged from psychological sketches and comical details of various people’s lives into an unexpectedly adrenaline-fueled and vicious spectacle—is exactly what Larry Cohen, a director whose films are practically impossible to watch all the way through, has always wanted to achieve in his work. And this duality in the narrative—where the director shifts the tone from Woody Allen to John Carpenter within a few scenes—is, above all, a sign of the filmmaker’s considerable skill.
