Voices from Beyond 4K 1991 Ultra HD 2160p
“Voices from Beyond” is one of the later successes of the great horror film master Lucio Fulci (“The Seventh Gate of Hell,” 1981). It features a gripping detective plot, the inevitable rotting corpses and the living dead, as well as impressive special effects—especially in the scene in the crypt where one of the characters is attacked by zombies. The director himself appears in the film as a medical examiner. A successful politician is admitted to the hospital in critical condition. The doctors are unable to save him, but his relatives aren’t particularly upset—they begin dividing up the inheritance. Only his daughter mourns her late father. Some time later, her father’s spirit makes contact with her and asks her to investigate the circumstances of his death, since everything that happened was the result of a planned conspiracy. It turns out that every family member had their own reasons to wish for his death. The young woman has little time to investigate—her father’s spirit can only communicate with her until his body decays…
User Review
I liked the movie; it’s certainly no masterpiece, but as a drama-mystery mixed with horror, I think it’s very good. Here, the director delves deeper into the theme of death; in his films *The City* and *The Gates*, there’s a certain hatred of death—or rather, of its uncertainty—but here (it seems to me) the theme of loss is explored, at times sentimentally, which works quite well. In my opinion, Fulchi is moving closer and closer to auteur cinema, while throwing in a little bit of horror—probably just to justify the film’s budget. The film is dedicated to Clive Barker, and several elements from this genius have made their way into it: highly stylized sets inspired by the characters’ nightmares, excellent use of lighting, and cinematography. It’s precisely because of the characters’ nightmares that the film is worth watching—they’re even a little breathtaking—because overall, the film is probably a bit weak.
