User Review

Unfortunately, we watched very few movies in July, but at least one of them definitely stood out and kept us hooked until the very end. The final 20 minutes of this high-profile project are pure madness. Five sweaty, exhausted men—all skilled in martial arts—perform a frenzied dance together, in which sometimes one fights another, sometimes two fight two, and sometimes the fifth fights the other four. The camerawork and editing don’t get distracted by anything superfluous—it’s nothing but endless fights, punches, bruises and scrapes, and groans. In a real street brawl, all those armchair karatekas and boxers would already be lying there on their last breath five minutes into the fight, but in this movie, the five of them wildly and eagerly swing their arms and legs, managing to defend themselves and attack in turn—and all of this goes on for 20–30 minutes. Total madness!

Most importantly, watching this is pure pleasure. *Mahach* may have a slightly fantastical undertone, but that’s not a big deal, because the powerful impact comes from the brilliant dedication of the actors and stunt performers, the skillful choreography, and the solid direction. It’s a Hong Kong film directed by a Japanese filmmaker, with Indonesian stars in the lead roles and a Thai crew. The result is a wonderful, unique Asian melting pot with a funny English audio track.
At first, it seemed like it was dubbed into English, but it appears the characters in the film were actually speaking a foreign language. The title “The Furious” evokes the era of video rental stores, when you’d come across all sorts of titles while picking out new action movies to watch. Nevertheless, “The Furious” perfectly describes what’s happening on screen. The fury isn’t hidden—it explodes and...

It blows everyone around with a shockwave. Yes, Se Miao and Joe Taslim aren’t the most compelling on-screen couple, but they had enough charisma to portray their characters in such a way that at times you really root for them, even though these rough-and-tumble bad guys aren’t exactly saints themselves. Most importantly, this is a truly wild action movie with brief, calm interludes to take your mind off the brawling—but with precise timing that makes you start missing the hand-to-hand combat just when you’re about to get bored. The plot is as simple as Vanya, the homeless guy from the next block who sleeps on different park benches in the summer. There’s not a trace of any half-naked women to distract you. You won’t find any philosophical scenes with loud but empty words. All that’s left is to sit down, turn on the movie, watch it, be blown away, and then turn it on again to rewatch the crazy finale one more time. The only thing missing was a young Jet Li to get caught up in this whirlwind. The end.
