Before us is a movie by James Whale, director of such films as: Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Invisible Man. Films that have marked themselves as benchmarks and classics of the genre. But apart from them, Wale has some quite good works, perhaps even underrated. One of them is 'The Old Dark House'.
At first the plot is simple: a group of people wander into the middle of nowhere and ask for shelter from the owners of an old, gloomy house. Only later do they learn that the house is literally filled with madmen and maniacs, eager to catch up with their prey. What immediately alerted is the abundance of comedic and dramatic scenes. Still, for a thriller there are too many of them, and sometimes out of place. Everything else is just fine, starting with excellent actors (Boris Karloff, Melvyn Douglas) and ending with a dark, oppressive atmosphere.
Connoisseurs of Karloff's work and old movies will definitely like it. But for the common viewer I advise to watch later works of Wale or Karloff. I certainly do not intend to rewatch the movie, nevertheless, I will give it a positive rating. The thirties are still only the beginnings of films of this genre, so do not judge them harshly. This is still a classic, and classics should be admired.
