Superman 4K 2025 Ultra HD 2160p
A new film about the origins of Superman/Clark Kent.
User Review
It's as if we're watching a movie from the middle. Yes, we knew it wasn't going to be another origin story, but there has to be some kind of beginning.
These were my thoughts after the first few minutes of the film. James Gunn throws us into an ordinary day in Metropolis, where Superman is already known to everyone, metahumans are commonplace, and no one is surprised when another battle with some monster takes place in the city center. That was the intention, but at first, you feel like you've missed the beginning and now have to figure out what's going on. Fortunately, it's not that difficult to do.
The plot here is fairly simple overall, but there are quite a few nuances and characters that are supposed to make it more rich and deep, but there is one problem—the viewer has no context. For example, the character Engineer, whose entire backstory in the film is essentially limited to one sentence. At the same time, she is on screen quite a lot, mainly in action scenes, of course. As the plot unfolds, it seems to me that her motivation could be more complex, and she could do something that goes against her initial position, but this does not happen. Individual shots, phrases, and the actress's performance give the impression that her character is deeper than shown in this story, but in the end, this leads nowhere.
And the same can be said about almost all the characters. They are interesting, memorable, and well played for a film of this genre. They all definitely have some kind of background, but so far it only exists in the director's head. We know very well that James Gunn is good at casting actors and introducing characters unknown to the general public, but the problem here is the same as before: we don't see the story of each of them from the beginning. Just imagine if the second part had been the first film about the Guardians of the Galaxy. I don't think it would have been as successful as the first part.
Not to mention that there are too many characters in Superman who are supposed to play a role in this cinematic universe, but the creators don't have time for them. Not even for Lois Lane and Lex Luthor. Lois Lane is just a journalist and the main character's love interest here, although she was given one proactive action in this story. Lex Luthor is an antagonist without any specific motivation. Perhaps there is potential for his development in the future, but for now, his character lacks the expected depth. Although I liked Nicholas Hoult's performance, even if it was a bit caricatured.
Of all the characters, Clark Kent is the most fully developed. Both of his personas—superhero and “ordinary guy”—receive sufficient screen time, and his motivation is clear and understandable. Perhaps it's not very complex, but it's enough. As the plot progresses, he faces a crisis of faith in himself and his destiny, but not for long. David Koresh convincingly embodies the given images.
The action segments are very well done, but don't expect anything special from them. In this regard, James Gunn simply did what he knows how to do: he didn't jump above his head, but he didn't fall below it either.
Between the fights and clashes, the story sags a little, but not critically, and seems quite coherent, except for the lack of a full-fledged introduction. And against the backdrop of this story, there is a whole world of a new cinematic universe, of which we are obviously shown only a small part, and it arouses some interest.
James Gunn has made a truly “comic book” movie. It's bright, with ridiculous costumes, humor, and full of conventions and rules of the world that the viewer must accept from the very first minute. If you're ready to do that, you'll get your share of enjoyment from the film.
It's not perfect, but it's a lively, colorful, and ambitious step into a new universe.
