“The Boy and the Beast” tells the story of a boy named Rene, who flees Tokyo after his mother's death and finds himself in a hidden world of beast-people. There, he becomes the clumsy apprentice of Kumate, a rough but lonely beast-warrior, and their constant bickering gradually gives way to a warm bond reminiscent of that between a foster father and son. The film combines fantasy training and spectacular battles with themes of coming of age, finding one’s place between two worlds, and battling inner darkness. Visually, it is a vibrant anime with intricately detailed backgrounds of Tokyo and the beast city, functioning both as an adventure and as a touching drama about a found family.
