Tarzan’s peaceful life in the African jungle came to an end with the arrival of a group of hunters led by Mr. Brightmore, who not only killed his mother, the chimpanzee Kalu, but also kidnapped his chimpanzee girlfriend, Cheeta. The hunters left no traces behind except for a dropped box of matches bearing the address: New York, 5th Street, No. 22. Signed, “The Black Beast.” Tarzan decides to take a reckless step—to set off in pursuit of the kidnappers and murderers into an unknown world called New York.
