From the very first minutes, that warm, almost forgotten feeling sets in—as if you’ve suddenly been transported back to a movie from the early ’90s. It seems as though David Robert Mitchell is deliberately recreating the style of early Steven Spielberg here. This tone is evident in the soft glow of streetlights, in a group of teenagers riding by on bicycles, and in the cozy everyday life of an ordinary suburb. And Michael Giacchino’s music picks up on this idea quite naturally.

The concept of a space-time wormhole that suddenly shatters this idyll is introduced into the plot with genre-defying audacity. There are no tedious pseudoscientific explanations—the filmmakers ask us to accept the rules of the game right away, and we agree. Reality simply cracks open, letting the Mesozoic Era pour in. It’s exactly the kind of moment when you physically feel what it’s like to step outside in the morning to get the newspaper and see a pterodactyl that’s flown in greedily drinking water from your inflatable pool.

What’s truly surprising is the level of acting, which is atypical for this genre. Hathaway and McGregor don’t cut corners by merely feigning cardboard-thin fear. You can see genuine panic in their eyes, even though the film isn’t about deep drama at all. You can tell that the actors came to the set to experience this moment, not just to run from a T-Rex on a green screen. That’s exactly why I strongly recommend watching the film in its original version. Even the most subtle dubbing inevitably kills that very animal instinct for self-preservation.

Yes, at times the abundance of supporting characters whose story arcs seem underdeveloped is striking. Some are dealing with school conflicts involving local bullies, while others are frantically searching the bushes for a runaway dog. But it seems the director felt it was important not to let the story devolve into just one family running around their house. It’s a sort of primal “Jumanji.”

Ultimately, the film works precisely as an excellent adrenaline-fueled ride. When the credits roll, you’re left with just one urge—to peek out the window, just in case, and check if the bushes in the backyard are moving suspiciously.
