There are some movies that flop spectacularly at the box office but then suddenly find a second life on home video. *The Explorers* is the kind of movie you don’t set out to watch—you just happen to stumble upon it one evening on TV or find it buried in a pile of VHS tapes.
That flavor of single-story America, the hidden corners of the suburbs, the chance friendships among teenagers, and the great desire to explore the boundaries of space—at times, it may seem as though the film is drawing inspiration from Spielberg’s *E.T.*
However, the film differs significantly from similar alien movies in its desire to show children the possibilities of all-powerful science.
In this film, school bullies don’t get their comeuppance. No, *The Explorers* teaches us that we come into this world to understand and explore every corner of our reality. Even the main character’s passion—second-rate B-movies—are actually masterpieces that inspire greatness.
The story is about children who managed to build a ship capable of traveling quickly through the air and into space. These kids aren’t geniuses; they simply dreamed up the schematics and plans for the engine’s design. How did that happen? That’s what we’re about to find out.
It might seem like the plot could revolve around the government wanting to seize the extraterrestrial technology for itself. However, the film sticks to its own path and ignores everything else, compelling viewers to journey alongside the children and share in their joy at new discoveries.
And then the third act begins… which somewhat ruins the whole atmosphere of childlike joy…
Judging by what I’ve heard, the director wasn’t allowed to finish the film properly, and I can’t even imagine what was in store for us. Everything that was charming and inspiring at the beginning of the film turns into some kind of toilet humor—even vulgar—full of farce and absurdity. Perhaps the original version was different, but, unfortunately, we’ll never know.
Recommended for: those who still have a spirit of adventure and discovery.
