The plot of Black Phone 2 will apparently revolve around serial killer Albert Shaw (Ethan Hawke), who kidnaps and murders young children. In the first film, teenager Finney Blake (Mason Thames) fell into the clutches of the killer but managed to escape with the help of the ghosts of dead children — Shaw's former victims. In the sequel, Derrickson delves a little into the villain's backstory and also tells the story of the psychic abilities of Finney's sister Gwendolyn (Madeleine McGraw).

Wow, children grow up so quickly, you don't even notice! At the time of filming the first part in the first half of 2021, Mason Thames was 14 years old and Madeline McGraw was 12. And even while the sequel was being filmed from November 2024 to January 2025, the boy had already turned 17, while the girl had turned 16. Both of them have grown so much that in the finished film, they look like they're 20-25 years old! Still, it's always nice to see the same faces when producers decide to make a sequel to a successful project. Both Mason Thames and Madeline McGraw showed their brilliant acting skills in the first part, and we hope that both of them have a great future ahead of them. It's gratifying that they didn't disappoint in the new story and once again delivered an attractive performance in the same roles.

For those who missed the backstory of the masked maniac, this gap has been filled. It's interesting, though, whether Scott Derrickson and S. Robert Cargill came up with everything themselves or whether they deliberately left part of Joe Hill's short story for the sequel, as if they already knew about the sequel. We haven't read it ourselves, so we don't know, but we're basing our opinion on the two films. Peter Jackson and Warner Bros. stretched Bilbo Baggins' little book about The Hobbit into three feature-length films, so the father of Deliver Us from Evil and Universal are no worse than that. In short, the publicly available trailer didn't lie: the Grabber will once again give the brother and sister no peace when they arrive at the godforsaken winter camp. We hope everyone knows the ending of the first part. No spoilers.

In order not to repeat themselves, this time they decided to make the sister the victim, whose superpowers will reach a new level. Personally, we got the feeling that the creators decided to enter the arena of the great Freddy Krueger in a hat, if you know what we mean. Everything that happens in a closed, frightening space with the characters is painstakingly reminiscent of stories about a maniac in a striped sweater. In principle, it's interesting to watch this, as Scott Derrickson doesn't repeat himself, even though there are echoes between the original and the sequel. Plus, the children have grown up in three years, so it was possible to add more blood, gore, and cruelty, which the director took advantage of. In terms of darkness, The Black Phone 2 is much closer to the cult classic Sinister.

In this film, the distant past collides with the present, which becomes a merciless test for the grown-up brother and sister. Both will get their fair share of injuries, cuts, and bruises. As in the charming first part, this Grabber will not stand on ceremony. So, the key points of the plot are: the maniac's past, the sister on the front line, and the three dead boys shown in the trailer. Why, how, what, where — you'll find out for yourself when you decide to watch it on a languid evening. In the sequel, the handwriting of the great father Joe Hill is perhaps more clearly visible, when overcoming fear requires great effort, no matter how much you hide, it will only get worse if you don't face evil head-on. Scott Derrickson paints the juicy necessary bustle smoothly, clearly, and in a daze.

So much so that at times I wanted to fall asleep from the slow pace. It is night, winter, snow, frost, a few quiet houses with a small number of camp employees.

And in order not to overwhelm viewers with the cruelty of a beautiful maniac, at times it turns into a quiet drama, with pensive gazes into the void, self-reflection, family relationships, and digging up the past. It's important, but be prepared anyway for when a high-quality copy of the year appears on the internet. A huge plus of The Black Phone 2 is that Scott Derrickson shot a lot of material in found footage format, when the digital camera format was changing to celluloid with its characteristic sound. There were also such shots in the first part, but here there is a real abundance of them. They are guaranteed to give you goosebumps.

And after watching it, you can't shake the feeling that in the future, if the box office receipts are awesome, the studio will definitely start production on some kind of prequel related to the mother of the two main characters. In the first part, the lady was mentioned in passing, but in the second part, memories of her become much more prominent. And in the prequel, they will try to explain this mess with the broken black phone, strange voices, and other fantasy-mysticism. Well, that's not certain. Overall, it turned out to be a solid fantasy horror film that you can show to the whole family to remind them of unity, solidarity, and mutual assistance. Is The Black Phone 2 surprising and mind-blowing? No. A new buzzword in horror? Revisit Sinister. Is it interesting to watch?
