Friends, thank you for not forgetting to search for the meaning of life, even though that's not what this is about right now. There is a concept known as a “one-man band,” which perfectly describes the director of this work. It so happens that the animation “Away” was made by one person—Gints Zilbalodis, for which I would like to express my special gratitude to him. With his creation, he inverts the well-known phrase, showing that “one man is a warrior in the field.” But what is he fighting against?
He is not so much fighting as revealing the theme of self-reflection. You know, Zen masters have a way of using aporias (koans), the purpose of which is to awaken the student's own deep thoughts, which we call “enlightenment.” This work rhymes with this phenomenon, calling on us, dear reader, to immerse ourselves in meditation, which the main character of the cartoon also goes through.
Why should we go somewhere far away? The so-called “Far Away” is what the Greeks called “apeiron,” because Gints Zilbalodis, like the flamboyant Gaspar Noé, tries to reflect with us on several mythologems at once:
a) Existence - the main character is literally thrown into the World, which from the very beginning resists him through interaction with the image of decay/entropy (a mysterious dark figure). The hero fights against entropy, not allowing it to destroy him, thus demonstrating the struggle of our fragile soul for a place in material reality.
b) The afterlife is another theme explored in this work. The director takes on the role of Socrates, using metaphors of paths, as well as a series of visual images and allegories, to explore our interaction with such metaphysical themes as birth, life, death, the existence of the soul, the problem of Evil, and the existence of Love.
And this is the main thrill of this creation – it conveys with astonishing accuracy the race between Achilles and the tortoise, which demonstrates to the viewer the endless spiral of life that carries us away into the distance. The main meaning may lie in the very distance between me and the meaning of life. Movement forward, movement that never ends. And in this movement lies the main aesthetic, the main essence, requiring no words or maxims.
If G. Noé's “Entrance to the Void” sought to shock and surprise us, while at the same time making us think about the Eternal, then “Into the Distance” approaches the question of the “Eternal” from the other side, allowing everyone to immerse themselves in this work.
The work, the animation, the director's intentions, the music, and the message—all of this prevents entropy from invading our lives, bringing order and meaning to them. Such products deserve attention, praise, and applause. I say “thank you.” Let's continue to watch (and make) and support good cinema, so that the best in us continues to break through. Honor and good luck!
