After the death of his parents, young Elio (Jonas Kibrib) moves in with his strict but caring aunt Olga (Zoe Saldana), a US Air Force employee who protects Earth from space debris. She once dreamed of becoming an astronaut, but had to put her professional ambitions aside to take care of her nephew. Elio misses his parents and realizes that he has unwittingly become a burden in his aunt's life. The earthly world seems alien to the boy — the hero finds solace in fantasies about distant stars, dreaming that aliens will one day take him away with them.

And they do take him away. A series of coincidences leads the boy to a meeting of the Communiverse, an intergalactic council of intelligent civilizations. Having mistakenly accepted the status of “leader of Earth” attributed to him, the hero embarks on a dangerous mission — negotiations with Grigon (Brad Garrett), a vengeful representative of one of the planets who threatens all cosmic diplomacy. But the heart of the cartoon is not Elio's attempt to resolve problems of cosmic scale, but his friendship with the villain's son, the sensitive and curious Glordon (Remy Agerly), who, unlike his father, has no desire for world domination and destruction.

User Review

I can proudly say that I am a big fan of Pixar. However, there is one small caveat: this devoted and boundless love came about thanks to such works as Toy Story, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, WALL-E, Ratatouille, Inside Out, etc. At the same time, it is worth acknowledging that sometimes the studio has projects that are done a little differently (Cars 2, The Good Dinosaur, Onward, Luca, etc.). And, perhaps, they cannot be called bad. But these are works of a completely different caliber, narrower in every sense of the word. At the same time, I am infinitely grateful to the studio for their attempts to create new characters and come up with original and independent stories in a period of total proliferation of sequels, prequels, adaptations, and remakes. And that's exactly what caught my attention about the cartoon ‘Elio’ back at the D23 Expo 2022. A standalone story with a simple introductory slogan: ‘What if I told you that we are not alone in the universe, and everything you've ever heard about aliens is true?’. Did that Pixar magic happen in this project?

Plot. Elio is an 11-year-old dreamer whom everyone around him considers strange, which is why he is alone in his hobbies. But one day his life is turned upside down. By pure chance, he is kidnapped by aliens and mistaken for the leader of our planet. Suddenly appointed ambassador of Earth, Elio finds himself at the center of events for which he is completely unprepared. Now he must find common ground with the bizarre aliens, overcome a series of dangerous trials, and finally reveal his true destiny.

Why is it for children? It is truly a cute and good-natured story, written and created by people who care about these characters. The only problem is that it is somewhat derivative, partly superficial, childishly exaggerated, and extremely predictable. No, the cartoon is harmless, and it has some basic ideas that will prove extremely useful for children, which is a plus. But anyone hoping for the next Pixar film that will change the rules of the game will once again be somewhat disappointed. And this, perhaps, is the main problem with the studio's latest works. They are all warm and cute, leaving a pleasant aftertaste, and you definitely don't regret watching them. But when you try to compare them with earlier works (let's take ‘WALL-E’ as an example), you realize that they are no match: the content is simplified, the emotions are duller and less dynamic, and even the animation lacks some of its former charm. Those works not only left a warm feeling in your heart, but also made you think, drawing you back for a second viewing to rethink them. Here, everything is extremely clear, since the content contains only those values that are useful at a young age. The adult characters here are clearly positive. If we look specifically at ‘Elio’, I have absolutely no questions about the main character's aunt, Olga: from the very beginning, she acted competently and with the right sensitivity towards the child, in his best interests, with great love and reverence, which she maintains throughout the plot. The only message in the cartoon from the creators to parents is “Hang in there, you are not alone either.” It's acceptable, but for Pixar, it's simply not enough.

Animation. The whole cartoon is pleasant to watch. There are big-eyed slugs and weird stingrays with tentacles. Everything is in the Pixar style, rounded and very comical in visual terms. The picture is ruined by a single scene at the end of the film, where an extremely realistic and very beautiful scene with a forest at dawn is shown on the screen. It really captivates the attention, but at the same time discourages, because it looks like a white crow against the background of the rest. It's like a contrast, like in Picasso, but also like something strange. Everyone will have to decide for themselves.

Dubbing. To be honest, I didn't really like it. Of course, it's professional dubbing, which is head and shoulders above any voice-over, but some moments leave you indifferent. Some characters speak with slurred diction, as if they have something hot in their mouths, while others miss the emotions on the screen. At such moments, you can't help but remember with longing the cult studios “Pythagoras” or “Nevafilm,” which do everything so well that there's nothing to complain about.
