Three renowned masters of Japanese animation present three short stories about the near future of humanity, a future that may not happen, but the danger of events taking this turn is ever-present in our lives...

User Review

Three animated short stories by renowned Japanese masters, united under the common title “Memories of the Future,” present a vision of the future, both distant and not so distant, in a variety of interpretations: from humorous to dystopian. The presentation of a probable future here claims to be visionary only in the sense of fantasy, but what can open a person's soul better than bold imagination?

1. Magnetic Rose

The year is 2092. The international crew of the spaceship Corona is busy with the dirtiest job imaginable—cleaning up “trash” in outer space: satellites that have fallen apart over time, debris from destroyed ships—these are their daily neighbors. But one day, their familiar routine is shattered by a beautiful mystery. They are tortured by beauty from the past: to the piercing music of Tosca, in Empire-style interiors, they encounter the living dead and the dead living. But even in the most terrible nightmare, if it suddenly materializes, one thing will always distinguish a living person from a dead one: the will to live, and this incident will become a real test of viability for a person outside of time. “The Magnetic Rose” is the strongest of the three novellas in terms of visual and musical unity and, as a result, the emotions it evokes.

2. The Stinky Bomb

A funny story about an ordinary guy who, to his misfortune, swallowed “the wrong cold pill.” In general, nothing special, but the last scene, which ends this comic sketch with dramatic pathos, convincingly states that even the president of all presidents is not able to write the script of his life in advance.

3. Cannon Fodder

In the kitchen, a mother wearing a soldier's helmet is preparing breakfast. Her son, awakened by the sound of a clock (with a cannon instead of a cuckoo), salutes a portrait of a gunner with a saber and enters the kitchen with a marching step... Thus begins a day in the city (country? world?), whose main slogan is: “Shoot and blow up with all your might for our people!” - only everyone has long forgotten who to shoot at. The director of this episode (who is also the ideological inspirer of the entire collection) paints a dystopian society in the spirit of Zamyatin or Platonov. Everything here is steeped in militarism: from television to children's drawings. Such a society cannot exist forever; people must overcome it, first within themselves, and then, if they can, from the outside. But the ending is left open, although the director's logic is already clear from the dialogue:

“Dad, can I ask you something: who are we fighting against?”

“When you grow up, you'll understand...”
