This is one of those things that you want to watch several times in your life to compare your impressions. I have refreshed my memory of this cartoon five times already. Each time, I watched it in one sitting, despite its relatively long duration (almost an hour and forty minutes, which is more like the length of a live-action film than an animated one). This is very rare in my personal viewing history, as it comes from Japan, and like most people, I mainly watch American and Russian films. But one cannot help but admire this Japanese work, because it is truly world-class, worthy of a place in the heart of any child in the world, and even adults may enjoy it. The style of design here is not typical of Asian cartoons, which we are used to and which not everyone likes. A friend of mine joked that people with narrow eyes are convinced that their eyes are normal, while “white” people have overly large eyes, and since the characters in anime are from the “Western world,” they are deliberately drawn with huge eyes. There is probably some truth in this joke, but whatever the case, I am by no means an anime fan. However, I have always loved Cobra, and I think it's impossible not to love it. It just lacks promotion, but I somehow got hold of a pirated video cassette back in 1995! Yes, Cobra's Space Adventure is far from the fame of Star Wars or even Star Trek, but how beautiful this cartoon is in a human way! What a mesmerizing plot it has!
Throughout the 20th century, books, songs, and films were released that were dedicated not only to space themes, but also to romantic love that withstands the test of fidelity across the boundless distances of the universe! Aelita's voice asking M. S. Los: “Where are you, Son of Heaven?” The film “June 31,” in which Tatyana Antsiferova searches for love throughout the world, among foreign spaces and centuries, even though earthly love cannot burn endlessly. “The Space Adventures of Cobra” is the most striking example of a work of the same kind. What is the main intrigue in “Star Wars”? It's just that the second most important villain, the black robot, turns out to be the biological father of practically the greatest good hero. The theme of Solo's love for Leia, of course, slips through, and it is not for nothing that someone compared this moment in the famous film with its analogue described in the cartoon about Cobra... But how far behind does this forgotten Japanese manga leave the hyped American blockbuster when comparing them in terms of their spiritual component!
And now, in the new century, the theme of love lost in time and space continues to excite the minds of science fiction writers and their fans. Films such as Stardust and Parallel Worlds have been released, and Avatar also fits into this series in a sense... As for songs, I can mention the creative efforts of two insanely talented but musically uneducated (except for music school) accountants from Odessa, whom I love dearly. Without a voice or ear for music (according to the general opinion of many people with real musical education) and without any special PR support (except for distributing their mp3s via the Internet) to create the conceptual brand Flёur (or, which is roughly the same thing, Cardiowave) and break into the ranks of actively touring and rock radio-rotating, and sometimes even TV-flashing bands. So, Olga Pulatova and Elena Voynarovskaya from Odessa often sing about space, with love playing a leading role in their work.
They changed
the orbits of the planets,
and now the stars
cannot
avoid collision...
...
To be
contained in transparent capsules...
How amazingly these excerpts from Voynarovskaya's songs resonate with the manga about Cobra! Maybe Elena and I watched the same cartoon?! It's hard to believe that she could have independently come up with images of the naked Queen Dominica, sacrificing herself for the harmonious movement of the center of the galaxy, and the sage sitting in a fetal position in a transparent sphere and floating through the universe.
Just as I don't believe in the coincidence of the image of an evil genius pulling out his own bone and striking with it like a cold weapon. Our blockbuster Night Watch surprised the world with Zavulon, fencing with his own spine, as well as a creepy bald doll on spider legs made of metal. But I am absolutely certain that the first was taken from Cobra, and the second from the first part of Toy Story!
So, for me, this Japanese animation is a heart-wrenching story of universal love and universal longing. I also can't help but mention the songs from this manga (I've come across two different soundtracks in two different versions;
I don't know which one is official, but both are divinely beautiful, although one of them is in Japanese). The only thing here that can be criticized is the overly conspicuous implausibility associated with Cobra's vitality! Here he is dodging thousands of laser beams, and then he falls flat from a great height and immediately jumps up! Sorry, but only the wolf in “Well, wait!” fell like that, and even Jedi knights died under blaster fire!
