It centers on a group of former classmates who, starting in first grade, play an adult version of a children's game called Tag. Every year at the same time, they drop everything they're doing and meet up to play. But this year, the game just happened to coincide with the wedding date of the only undefeated player. Hoping that this solemn event will make him an easy target, the friends start playing, but the champion is one step ahead of his comrades every time and is not going to give up so easily.
“Tag” - American comedy by Jeff Tomzik, based on a true story about former classmates who attended school in Washington state. The main roles played by Jeremy Renner, Leslie Bibb, Jon Hamm, Isla Fisher, Ed Helms, Rashida Jones, Hannibal Burress, Annabelle Wallis and Jake Johnson.

Hogan (Ed Helms) and his friends have been playing salsa for thirty years. Every year during the month of May they try to best each other, and the men will do anything to win. But in all thirty years, the friends have never once managed to catch the sharp and nimble Jerry (Jeremy Renner) off guard, no matter what traps they set for him. When Jerry announces that he's getting married and that he wants to go out undefeated, Hogan gathers his hometown friends to give Jerry one last, fiercest fight.
“Tag” is based on true events. Debutant Jeff Tomsic 's comedy is so eager to get the word out that it communicates its “reality” on the poster, in trailers, in press releases, at the beginning of the film, and even at its end, where there's a home video montage of real adult smut fans (who, of course, look absolutely nothing like stately movie stars).
Nevertheless, this is by no means a true story, but a screen story. The movie is inspired by a real passion, but it is constructed according to the laws of Hollywood, and “Tag” looks best when it forgets about realism and turns into a comic-sadistic cartoon like “Tom and Jerry”, only with famous actors. The under-the-top heroes follow Jerry around, fall off rooftops, fall into traps, get hit by blows that would send real people to the grave or to intensive care... And immediately get up as if nothing had happened to swallow a new dose of humiliation from a fellow superman or come up with another cunning plan. Stupid? Undoubtedly, but it's driveable, funny and with a good fight choreography, which is what is required from an action-comedy.
The problems with “Tag” begin when the picture periodically slows down and remembers that it needs to be “real”. At such moments, viewers have time to notice that the lead actors have a significant age difference and that they are not very believable as peer classmates.
In addition, dark-skinned comedian Hannibal Beress and his melancholy character don't fit the energy of the hyperactive strip. They remind us of Vovochka from the anecdote, who wants to come to the holiday to spoil it for everyone. And in general - it is clear that if an adult Negro runs around America in broad daylight after white guys, he will be quickly shot by vigilant citizens or the police. In sci-fi this is possible, but in a marginally plausible movie - no. By the way, the actual saloonkeepers in the home movies are solidly white, with no hint of political correctness.
Finally, when near the end the movie decides that “buddy” comedy isn't complete without bawdy pathos, it looks as wild as bumps on a birch tree. The action in the picture is too cartoonish and the plot too silly to suddenly offer the audience not only to cackle, but also to worry. The authors of the movie, it seems, and themselves felt that they were doing something wrong, and the relevant scenes are played and presented without forcing, as if embarrassed: “We didn't want to, we were forced...” There are not many sentiments in the picture, but they manage to spoil the impression.
In fact, “Tag” is a story about adults who behave like kids and are not ashamed of it. However, children should not show the movie, because every second phrase in it is sweary or vulgar. In the original, and in general mate-speamat. Our translators softened the tape and replaced the forbidden words with euphemisms, but it is still a movie only for adult connoisseurs of dirty jokes and friendly insults. Especially different heroine Isla Fisher. Hogan's wife does not participate in the fights (the rules forbid to involve “girls”), but she cheers so frantically, as if the fate of the world is being decided. Other women in the movie for furniture. In the game, they are only observers, and the romantic lines are barely hinted at. So you'll get the most pleasure if you come in a male company, buy a lot of beer and prepare to laugh at the cheerful idiocy.
