A sarcastic and at the same time kind and charming mockery of classic westerns, wrapped in an absurd story about a town through which they want to build a railroad. And for this purpose they send there as a sheriff a black slave from yesterday, causing, understandably, the fierce indignation of the inhabitants (this, in fact, was intended).

Having spoofed almost all stamped genres, Mel Brooks, of course, could not pass by the western with its cardboard villains, evil mercenaries and defenseless inhabitants of small towns. Taking on the lead role of Cleavon Little, as well as “appointing” himself governor, he again turned to the excellent duo of Gene Wilder-Madeline Kahn, with the former playing a high-class gunslinger-drinker, and the latter - a visiting German singer. This is already a good reason to watch the movie, but of course there are others - heck, it's Mel Brooks!

In general, the creation of the picture will not be called easy. For starters, Brooks was having trouble coming up with titles, until finally, while taking a shower, he came up with “Sparkle Saddles.” Then came friction with the studio, which wasn't happy with the “provocative” script and, in particular, Richard Pryor (in addition to his role as screenwriter, he was supposed to play one of the main characters). But he listened to too loud music and took too heavy drugs, so the sheriff was still Cleavon. And in addition, the management of Warner Bros. long demanded that the director cut the scene with the word “nigger”, although Little himself on this matter did not express prejudice. Brooks did not give up his position, although, in the end, one scene did cut: the one where in pitch darkness Lily von Stupp fiercely seduces the sheriff, and he gives her: “Madam, I'm sorry to disappoint you, but what you suck is my hand.” So the tape lost the most vulgar joke in its repertoire.

However, the effort paid off with more than enough. Most critics accepted the film favorably (and if at that time and not, in 2006, “Sparkling Saddles” got into the national register of films), the audience weighty vote dollar, and this is not to mention the three nominations for “Oscar” and two won “Bafta”. Considering that modern parodies rarely win anything other than the Golden Raspberry, it turns out pretty good. But a person going to watch a parody is more likely to ask if it's funny. There are plenty of funny moments in the movie: it is a speechy preacher, and excellent duet of black sheriff and drunkard, and a beautiful gang of thugs, and the phrase about badges, and an idiotic plan to save the city, and the final caboodle in the studio. Even if all this won't put you out of breath, it will at least make you smile more than once. So those who know and love Brooks should definitely watch it, and it is not a sin to recommend it to connoisseurs of good parodies.
