Mississippi 1964. The murder of three human rights activists raises a wave of riots. Two FBI agents, Anderson and Ward, are tasked with investigating the case and finding the perpetrators. The wife of the local sheriff, who helps Anderson and Ward with the case, discovers a secret that casts a shadow on the main people in town, making those involved in a bloody conspiracy. But that doesn't stop Anderson, an agent with years of experience. He knows that sometimes the law must be broken to achieve a goal, or the killers will remain at large.

Alan Parker is an ambiguous director. This is a man whose incisive, acutely social position in cinema has never been challenged by anyone. Not without reason, he holds such a high position from the Directors Guild. He always has his own opinion on the subject matter touched upon by him, unlike many other colleagues. His pictures, almost always accepted with restraint, or vice versa. Their release into the masses, almost always accompanied by a surge of indignation or approval, but indifference, never. And so it was this time. The picture “Mississippi Burning” is based on real events that took place in the distant 60's, in the south of the United States....
What can I say? It's a success. And there are many elements of success. Of course, Parker's got Hackman. Contrasting the somewhat goofy, direct and assertive style of Agent Anderson with the somewhat more polite and obliging Ward (played well by Defoe), the partners investigate the disappearance of three civil rights activists. City officials are involved, and our friends know it. There are no chases or fights in the movie. It is packed with dialog, walking through locations, and collecting clues. But there is a spirit. And that spirit is as strong as ever in Parker. So if you want to see a couple hours of entertainment, pass it by. It's an extremely serious movie, it soaks your soul with compassion, it makes you think. It makes you think about a lot of things. In my opinion, the director has gone a little overboard with the harshness. But you get a sense of realism from what's going on.
Hackman's performance was superb, and it couldn't have been any other way. Defoe certainly looks faded on his background, but it's still young Defoe... I liked the game of Brad Durifa. You can see that the guy is a great theater-goer. Not bad and his wife in the picture McDormand ... All in all, the ensemble was really good.
Bottom line: a strong, dense movie about the disadvantage of the black population in the south of the United States in the 60s of the 20th century. Gene Hackman's excellent performance, coupled with his young colleague William Defoe, make the already acutely social (sorry, I can't find another word to characterize the theme) picture even more significant in the eyes of the ordinary viewer.... And even more so for an American.
