It is impossible to imagine the North Pole without the legend of Santa Claus, and even many adults believe that this magician really exists. Therefore, it is not surprising that every year a large number of Christmas-themed movies are released and one of them was a blockbuster directed by Jack Kazdan called “Red One”. It's a family movie with a huge production budget of $200-250 million dollars and big stars in leading roles. However, I can't say that this movie impressed me for the full amount of money it was made for.

The main character of the movie is Callum Drift, the head of security for the North Pole. He guards Santa himself and follows him everywhere like a shadow. They get along well as a couple, but before the next Christmas Eve something happens that nobody really expected - Santa is kidnapped by a group of unknown persons in masks. Unfortunately, Cal couldn't stop them and now he has to figure out who might be behind it and, as a consequence, get Santa back in his magic sleigh in just a couple of days left before the holiday.

The only one who can help Cal save Santa and Christmas is Jack, a bounty hunter and private investigator. He's one of the best in the business and they called him to the Pole for a reason. Yes, Jack is on the list of naughty guys, which pisses off the valiant Cal, but since in an emergency there are no options, the head of the security service has to go around the world with his new partner. And, as it turns out, Santa's opponents are powerful and dangerous, they are going to change the hierarchy of Christmas, and this is really no joke.

The very idea of the movie looks very tempting. We are shown a pretty convincing Magical North Pole and how things work here. Maybe the details responsible for the creation of toys and other presents are omitted here, and nevertheless when you watch the movie, everything that we are shown here looks quite natural. Santa lives in a huge northern metropolis with a bunch of magical creatures and ordinary people. He tries to look after everything and in return the local population adores him. All in all, the whole Pole thing is pretty compelling here. But everything else we see is a blatantly artificial adventure story.

There are almost no unexpected moments in the movie, and the jokes look strained and not always funny. Chris Evans is first in charge of them, but it is worth recognizing the fact that he is not given the exposure he deserves. There is a semblance of drama in the movie, which has to do with his son, but all this is shown somehow superficially. And Evans' character has enough reasons to joke, but he uses platitudes and generally works according to the scheme, bringing nothing unique to his adventurous image. Oh even so he's far more interesting than Dwayne Johnson as himself. If Evans is at least trying to play something, The Rock is banally himself here from a dozen past movies, including Jumanji and Fast and Furious. That doesn't seem like a bad thing, but something new would have been welcome.

“Red One” has been touted as the top Christmas movie of 2024, but it's fair to say that this movie doesn't quite live up to expectations. You can watch it for the sake of interest, but to make it one of your favorites on the theme of winter holidays, so it definitely won't happen.
