Anora, a sex worker from Brooklyn, impulsively marries the son of a Russian oligarch. The news is learned by the guy's parents and they personally come to New York to annul the marriage.

About the new project of American director Sean Baker, not much is known. “Anora” is stated as a romantic comedy, the plot of which unfolds in Brooklyn. The main roles have Micah Maddison, Mark Eidelstein, Karren Karagulian and suddenly Yura Borisov. Given that “Red Rocket” and “The Florida Project” premiered on the Côte d'Azur in 2021 and 2017, respectively, “Anora's” appearance in Cannes' main competition seems a given.

My first impression is that this is a very drawn-out movie. When the international quartet went in search of Ivan the Fool, and the scene went on and on, going from one club to another, I got bored and tried my best not to distract myself from watching (I'm waiting for a medal for patience from Sean Baker) for the sake of crying with Mikey Madison in the finale. Yes, I'm easily manipulated. But then I asked myself the question - why did that scene bring me to tears?

I think it was the age-old technique of playing on emotions. It's like the ending of Fellini's “Nights of Cabiria” - tears of disappointment mixed with a smile of hope. Otherwise it's sickening to live. I, too, an outside observer, give this lifeless movie a chance for salvation - romance - thanks to the eyes of Yura Borisov (whom the director shamelessly exploits by putting him in the frame with a truly moneyed audience again and again, so that this panopticon doesn't look so caricatured). But comparing the finale to everything we've seen before, this “romance” seems like another escapist escape for director Baker, who paints the dirt and vulgarity of the social underbelly with broad strokes throughout the movie, and in the finale calls everyone to Disneyland - behind the “romantic” facade of which perhaps Parthen Rogozhin is hiding.

I can't understand why Greta Gerwig would think of comparing “Anora” to the eccentric comedies of Hollywood's golden age. Personally, I laughed only with the joke about the name Igor, when Borisov's character explains to Anora the meaning of his name - protector, and she raises him to laughter - why are you rubbing it in my face, because Igor is a hunchbacked freak (hello, Bela Lugosi). The joke for movie buffs succeeded. But it also proved that the difficulties of translation do not extend to subtexts and, unfortunately, in “Anora” the joke about the servant of Frankenstein's monster is the only feast for the mind.

If one were to look for associations, for me personally, “Anora” is a sequel to “The Florida Project” by the same Baker. Growing up Mooney becomes a stripper and prostitute like her mother, but she still dreams of going to Disneyland. I don't understand why Sean Baker makes Anora look like a victim of the rich? She's a victim of her fantasies. And those fantasies were all about material things. Didn't Anora sleep with Ivan for money? And sleeping with a man for money is prostitution. Where's the love in that?

Baker's being dishonest. He sides with Anora, who resents the words “escort” and “whore” being used against her. But it's true. Did the ring on her finger stop making her a prostitute? Where does such naivety come from when Anora's experience comes out in the dialog between her and Vanya, when the latter notices that she looks older than her years. Life has beaten her down. But in the movie, in this small slice of time cut out of an entire life, she comes across as so naive... Did she even draw her future life with Ivan - lying on his chest while he's playing video games? It's a dead end. It's a long party. And Karagulian's character also states the obviousness of the situation - you married a spoiled child who gets everything in life for nothing. What kind of decisive action do you expect him to take? Sometimes I catch myself thinking that I'm watching some kind of protracted talk show, where everyone is yelling and figuring things out, pure Malakhovshchina. And for this they give me the Palme d'Or... I guess I don't understand something in this life.

Just like I don't understand Sean Baker's “criticism” of social relations. The world is cruel, and it's still weak to say how cruel it is, but does the director explore the reasons why Anora chose to become a prostitute? Looking at her, there is no doubt that the girl is a professional at what she does. She knows where she stands in the market system. Until the finale, I saw no embarrassment or misunderstanding in her eyes. She sells herself. She's paying with herself. And that's the only thing she's capable of. If there's a spark of real feelings in the finale, it makes her cringe and become hysterical. But then again, I have little faith in the fact that in her notional 23 years, Anora has never once met sympathy and empathy from the opposite sex. But apparently the car was the wrong one.

But for almost two and a half hours I watch the conscious choice of a person, and sincerely do not understand - what is the conflict here? And after a balanced reflection, and not under the influence of emotions, if anyone and sympathize, it is the cleaning service employees who have to clean up after everyone in this “eccentric” movie.
