The action of the movie takes place in the not too distant future. People in the exploration of other planets are assisted by special clones, or regenerated employees. One of such clones, Mickey-7, goes to colonize the icy world of Niflheim and disappears. Upon returning to the base, the hero finds his replacement there.

User Review

Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho quickly established a reputation as a mainstream filmmaker who addressed the pressing problems of modern society in his social satire. In “Through the Snow” he was interested in social stratification, in “Okcha” he criticized the callousness of corporations, and the Oscar-winning “Parasites” was about the struggle of the poor for a place in the sun. The screen adaptation of Edward Ashton's sci-fi novel “Mickey 7” fits perfectly into this series: the main character of the movie is a clone of a man who once agreed that his copies could be used as expendable material for dangerous tasks in space and on the distant planet Niflheim. What's not to criticize the exploitation of the working class by those in power? And Pon Joon-ho criticizes, and with heart, with jokes and jokes, with a good grotesque, at the same time not forgetting to raise the issues of ethical treatment of animals and reflect on the components of personal identity.

It all looks quite cheerful, and the giant roaring silent walkers, called “creepers”, fall in love with themselves much stronger than Robert Pattinson's character, but, as it often happens with the creations of independent creators, suddenly receiving large budgets in Hollywood, does not let go of the thought of the secondary and unnecessary nature of everything that happens on the screen. Having seriously reduced the time of action, the director at the same time reduced the number of conflicts (especially affected by the issue of “Ship Tessei”, the relationship between the two versions of Mickey and Mickey 17 with “Cat” Kai), because of which most of the movie turned into a prolonged exposition to the conversation that throwing cute animals into a mixer is as bad as soullessly printing people on a 3D printer. The main villain, an eccentric eccentric this time played by Mark Ruffalo, reminds too much of Jake Gyllenhaal's character from “Okcha”, and his faithful companion Gwen Johansson (Toni Collette), who wasn't in the original version of the story at all, is simply merged by the film's creators into oblivion by the end, though initially presented as a gray cardinal, whispering to the captain of the ship the nastiest ideas.

I heard that the picture was indecently long at the stage of editing, and, quite possibly, the final version is not the most successful, but just maximally satisfied the studio and producers. It's a shame, because a lot of things concerning the motivation and disclosure of secondary characters and villains, remained “chewed up”, and some scenes, telling about the main character's relationship with friends and beloved, instead of explaining what is happening caused new questions. So, for example, Nasha, Mickey's mistress and in the novel an unambiguously positive figure, in the movie turned into another exploiter of the unfortunate clone, and friendship with Timo, about whom you can say “with such a friend and no enemies needed”, in general lost all meaning.

Of course, “Mickey 17” has not become and will never become a new “Star Troopers”, to which it is so often compared, and it is unlikely that it is with him later will be associated with Bong Joon-ho, but just now the movie may well close the need of the audience in a cute not stupid blockbuster, for which you want to go to the movies.
