User Review

Intrigue #1. Why did Wes Anderson decide not to work with Robert D. Jowmen for the first time in his career, inviting Bruno Delbonnel instead?

Intrigue #2. Why Phoenician? Could it be because the director's wife is of Lebanese origin?

Intrigue #3. The return of Bill Murray. What role does he play?

Wes Anderson. New film. Starring the trio of Del Toro, Serra, and Trippleton. Surprising, isn't it? At first glance, it's a fairly simple and straightforward story about a cunning adventurer who has a grand plan on paper, but since any brilliant plan has a tendency to fall apart before your eyes, the aging man has to show his cunning in negotiations with various people who are ready to tear his business partner's throat out. To keep things interesting, this eccentric character is joined by equally colorful partners: a polite nun who is drawn to life outside the church with all its sinful temptations, and a modest tutor and entomologist with a huge secret. The whole story sparkles and shines thanks to a sprinkling of Hollywood stars who are not ashamed to be in the second, third, or even fourth roles. What can you do? It's an honor for them to appear in Wes Anderson's films, even if it's just a minute or two of screen time, gentlemen.

But if you dig deeper and don't let the typical shots of a famous director cloud your mind, you'll find that beneath the spy comedy lies the age-old theme of fathers and children. Ja Ja Korda (yes, named after the famous American actress Ja Ja Gabor and British director and producer Alexander Korda, both of Hungarian origin) suddenly finds himself growing closer to his daughter Lizl, who, in turn, also unexpectedly realizes that it is worth giving their new family relationship a chance, although there is a separate so-called intrigue surrounding the identity of the real father of the confused novice, whose mother died in very mysterious circumstances. All this happens during their personal odyssey through the Phoenician cities, which a quiet, bespectacled entomologist unwittingly joins, and he clearly finds himself caught between two fires. It's funny that the young man himself will rethink a lot while watching the father and daughter. He's definitely lucky to have them.

I watched the film yesterday. At one point, it seemed that Wes Anderson had made a boring movie, and while watching it, I was tempted to close my eyes and fall asleep. But now, the aftertaste is such that the script is really interesting, the main three characters go on a journey to a new “self,” while there are also plenty of entertaining episodes. There's a dispute settled through basketball, a plane crash, black-and-white flashbacks of the afterlife, a grand battle at the end of the story, and a very touching epilogue. I read somewhere that Wes Anderson even called the project the darkest of his career, which explains the decision to invite Bruno Delbonnel himself, who helped build the cold world that throws a wrench in the wheels of the lucky antihero. But every time, through the noise, complaints, reproaches, and threats, Ja Ja Cord passed through the redoubts to ultimately achieve a different result.

And it's not to say that this doesn't make him happy. Life is full of surprises, and it would be better if there were more pleasant surprises. Wes Anderson is not deceitful, does not prepare the audience for a “plot twist,” and presents the expected ending. The Phoenicians in ancient times were famous for their outstanding trading skills, so it is no coincidence that the main antihero managed to extricate himself from tricky situations. This was probably true of the director's father-in-law, to whom The Phoenician Scheme is entirely dedicated. Like his wife, he was of Lebanese origin, and Lebanon was once the center of Phoenicia, so Wes Anderson clearly didn't just poke his finger at the globe at random. Finally, what role does Bill Murray play? It's very fitting for him as a legend, and audiences have appreciated and will continue to appreciate it. Meanwhile, Mia Triplett was a revelation for us, as we had never seen this nepo-baby on screen before. Kate Winslet's daughter did not get lost among the cast, showing that she is a future Hollywood star.
