Actually, I want to start by saying that I came across the movie Toxic Avenger by accident—I saw a short clip on YouTube. Then I saw another one, after which I decided to find out what it was all about.
I got a very superficial introduction to the franchise through an internet search: there was a series of trashy films back in the 80s and 90s, then an animated series, which, alas, I didn't get to see as a child, and then they even put on a musical based on this universe in America. However, I went to see this film with great interest.
Without going into detail, the film shows the life of a simple janitor (played by the very famous Peter Dinklage) who has lost his wife and is raising his adopted son. In addition to his already difficult life, he faces many challenges, which the main character struggles with throughout the story.
The film does not strive to be overly serious—in addition to numerous references to past films and pop culture in general, it is full of irony and dark humor. The genre itself suggests that the film should show tons of dark humor and mock stereotypical social problems. However, not everyone may like this.
The narrative is dynamic, sometimes you simply don't have time to recover from one difficult scene before the next one pushes your emotions to the limit again. In my opinion, this is done on purpose to keep the attention of zoomers, who, according to popular opinion, have trouble concentrating, and for me personally, this is more of a minus than a plus.
This is achieved through excellent cinematography, dynamic frame changes, and the staging of the frames themselves.
To sum up, the film is light, funny, and extremely dynamic. As soon as I find the time and opportunity, I will watch it again, with a pencil in hand, because there are so many references that it is impossible to catch them all at once.
I can confidently recommend this film, especially if you're watching it with friends. I think you understand that watching it alone won't bring as many emotions and sparkling jokes as watching it with a whole group. Besides, going to the movies to see Toxic Avenger is a great excuse to get everyone together.
