User Review
The relatives of an eccentric millionaire who died twenty years ago gathered at his gloomy estate to read his will. On that same ill-fated night, a dangerous maniac escaped from a mental hospital and decided to hide in the old estate, ready to tear his victim to pieces.
The plot is quite interesting and unusual for a film from the 1920s. In addition, the film could have been the starting point for films with similar scenarios: Ten Little Niggers, The Ghost in the House on the Hill, 13 Ghosts, The House of Night Ghosts, and others.
The film skillfully intertwines various genres. Drama, comedy, horror, detective—all of this is combined in 80 minutes of silent film. I am sure that in the 1920s, the film was a real breakthrough in the thriller and detective genres. Now, 85 years later, it looks just as good, but with the label of “classic.”
