Lately, I’ve mostly been writing reviews of old movies, or ones that have been severely underrated. To be honest, I prefer the cinema of the last century to modern films. The thing is, there are so many soulless movies coming out these days—in the literal sense of the word. And films without a soul have never interested me. That’s why I have to revisit and rewatch classics like "The Great Outdoors".

I watched this film by Howard Deutsch not too long ago, even though it’s been nearly thirty years since it was released. It’s immediately clear that the screenplay was written by the famous screenwriter and director John Hughes. He always loved themes that focused on family and youth. Most of his films are about this. Here, too, we see a very simple comedy, though one made with heart. It’s about how the Ripley family goes on vacation to a picturesque spot. The head of the family, Chet, used to go there with his own father when he was a young man. Now Chet has two sons of his own. And this place was the perfect getaway—until their relatives, with whom they didn’t always get along, came to visit. That’s when the adventures begin: water skiing, running from a bear, and other comical situations.

Most of the funny moments fall to the character played by John Candy, who frequently appeared in John Hughes’ films. He did his best to make the audience laugh, and he succeeded. The film also features Dan Aykroyd, who, paired with John Candy, is sure to delight viewers.

Overall, this is already a classic comedy that will give viewers a good time in front of the screen. You might not laugh throughout the entire movie, but all the jokes are above the belt. So you can safely watch this movie with the whole family.
