I really liked this movie. I know that, but if you ask me why, I wouldn’t be able to give you a proper answer… I just liked it.

It’s not a comedy. There are no mind-blowing one-liners or gags, no funny situations or amusing scenes like in *The Father of the Bride*; here, they don’t make light of life’s problems or play the hero. There’s no action and no drama; no one cries out for justice or calls for equality...

The pace is slow and unhurried. Tears, laughter, joy, sorrow, swearing, declarations of love—that’s life! Perhaps that’s what charmed me about this film—its realistic take on life. The characters here are real people with plenty of problems. The life of an average American family is laid bare before us in all its colors, without embellishment or exaggeration...

Here, people make mistakes and don’t always come out of them with dignity; here, children aren’t cheerful, rosy-cheeked little angels, but ordinary boys and girls who cry, play, fight, and get sick. No cuteness, sentimentality, or tragedy...

This is a very honest film, like a slice of life as it really is.
I didn’t expect this from the famous comedians Steve Martin and Rick Moranis, and certainly not from Howard, who has always made flashy, empty movies—even less so. All these people have created a very good film about life that you need to watch.
