Beckett Redfellow, heir to a multibillion-dollar fortune, is systematically eliminating everyone who has dared to lay a hand on his wealth.

“How to Make a Killing” is the second film by John Patton Ford, a name you’ve likely never heard before. A couple of years ago, he directed “Emily the Criminal” starring Aubrey Plaza, which, unfortunately, despite being a strong genre statement, did not bring the director the success he deserved. And now, years later, following that less-than-successful debut, Ford has released “How to Make a Killing.”

The film tells the story of Beckett Redfellow’s rise, from his childhood to the massacre of his own family by his relatives for the sake of a fortune estimated at billions of dollars. But how could the protagonist do such a thing to his own kin? The answer is obvious. The fact is, Beckett is an illegitimate heir. His mother fell in love with an ordinary cellist, became pregnant by him, and refused her father’s—the clan’s founder—suggestion to get rid of the child. For this, she was driven from her own home and forgotten by the entire family. But as soon as her son began to grow up, she told him something very important: his grandfather had set up a trust to avoid paying inheritance tax, meaning that even though they had been disowned by the family, sooner or later the entire fortune would ultimately go to Beckett—he just had to wait his turn. And since he was the youngest in the family, his only options were to outlive his relatives or kill them.

That was a brief summary of the plot; now let’s move on to the film itself. What sets "How to Make a Killing" apart from all other A24 projects is its insanely fast narrative pace. From the very first minutes, the film picks up speed and keeps accelerating throughout its runtime. Sometimes so much so that some murders take place in literally a matter of minutes. This works in the film’s favor, as watching a tedious thriller with minor comedic elements isn’t the best experience. The second and most important plus, without a doubt, is the acting by Glen Powell and Margaret Qualley. As for Powell, he’s in his element, incredibly charismatic and brutal. You believe in his character and empathize with him, even despite what he does. As for Qualley, well, she’s beyond praise. In my opinion, Margaret is one of the best actresses right now. You can count the number of people who can compete with her on one hand. She’s magnificent. Plus, Ford deliberately gives her limited screen time so the audience eagerly awaits her appearance, and she effortlessly steals every scene. As for the rest of the cast, unfortunately, no one really stands out. Jessica Henwick’s character isn’t very well-developed. She pales in comparison to Cooley. Plus, there’s absolutely no chemistry between her character, Ruth, and Beckett. Zack Woods, Topher Grace, Ed Harris, Bill Camp, and Rafferty Law (Jude Law’s son) have almost no screen time, so it’s impossible to connect with their characters; consequently, they simply perform their roles at a competent level. The film’s undeniable strengths also include the cinematography and the brilliant soundtrack, which sticks in your head for quite a while. As for the film-style shooting characteristic of A24—that’s already a tradition, since almost all of their projects are shot this way, so it’s unlikely to impress anyone.

So what do we end up with? "How to Make a Killing" is a prime example of a solid, soulful thriller with touches of dark comedy that is simply destined to be a hit.
