And while the first film remains a cult classic beloved by many, let’s be honest—it’s still a product of its time. The 2000s were a period when glossy magazines and the runway still held immense power and influence. And that’s exactly why *The Devil Wears Prada* was such a hit. Thanks to that, as well as its charismatic characters and a simple—perhaps even naive—but relatable plot. And while the characters are still just as charismatic, the film has lost its relevance. And the simple plot just doesn’t work the way it used to.

Yes, on the one hand, the film tries to address contemporary issues. And this isn’t just the decline of print media, but also smaller nuances, like ostentatious tolerance (just look at the person at the table correcting Miranda Priestly to make her speech… more “politically correct”) and the dominance of meme culture. But on the other hand, the film treats these as mere background, without really focusing on the details. It doesn’t delve into these themes, but merely touches on them lightly so as not to alienate those who grew up with the first film.

Plus, the sequel relies heavily on nostalgia. The same storylines, the same character arcs, with a light sprinkling of modern trends. Yes, Hathaway’s character has gotten much older, but she’s still learning to be less naive. Yes, Presley now works in more modest circumstances, but she’s also learning to be more grateful to others. Yes, this is far from the worst example of so-called “nostalgia bait,” which modern Hollywood is simply overflowing with, but the film makes a concerted effort not to change anything.

And that, perhaps, is the main problem. Where the first film set trends, the second merely blindly follows them. *The Devil Wears Prada*—though simple—is a unique film, just like the world of high fashion itself. “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” on the other hand, is just another sequel that relies heavily on repeating the old formula, just to bring back the same audience. Is that a bad thing? Definitely not for longtime fans. They’re happy to see the same characters and the same setting a second time, and significant changes could have fundamentally ruined the original’s essence. But you won’t attract a new fan base with this approach.

The film is far from bad. It’s beautifully shot, and the costumes and atmosphere are just as delightful as ever. On top of that, the returning actors are just as charismatic as ever. Good old Meryl Streep didn’t disappoint (though when has she ever?), and while Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt have gained popularity since then, they haven’t lost their former charm. Still, a movie like this only works once—for a single viewing. But, unlike the original, this film risks getting lost in time and simply being forgotten. It’s like an attempt to dust off an old dress and strut around in it like before. Yes, people might appreciate this retro vibe once, but you can’t call it a fashion statement. And that kind of fashion doesn’t stick around for long.
