A musical comedy about a boy from Dublin who, due to his family’s financial problems, is transferred from an expensive private school to a free one with a good reputation. It turns out to be a Christian school with very conservative rules and rowdy students. Every cloud has a silver lining—there, he makes new friends and, by chance, meets a girl who looks like she stepped right off the cover of a music magazine. The story takes place in the mid-’80s, when bands like The Cure, A-HA, Duran Duran, and The Clash were all the rage—though their style isn’t exactly welcomed in Northern Ireland. But they really want to play modern music, so the guys form their own band and start rehearsing at one of their homes. Soon they move to London, where a new life awaits them.

With the economy in decline, the family budget can’t keep up with the demands placed on it, and, as is usually the case, education is the first thing to suffer, forcing the younger of the two sons to switch from a public school to a Jesuit school, where he immediately falls prey to local bullies and the school’s strict rules, seemingly setting himself up for a lifetime of trouble.

However, Conor isn’t particularly afraid of the attacks from a resentful, immature peer; he laments the humiliations and throws down yet another challenge to the hated monk—the administrator—because he has a goal: the girl standing in front of the house across the street, whose attention he intends to win through the power of his music and words, spreading the word throughout the neighborhood and gradually gathering a gang of like-minded friends who agree with his bold conviction.

From the very first minutes, you want to know: just how real is he? The blush on the cheeks of the implausibly self-assured protagonist, who instantly sets his sights on a goal and heads toward it with unwavering determination, defying street conventions and school rules, channeling his feelings into songs that shed light on his bright sadness.

He is the real deal—Ferdia Walsh-Pilo, who sings, speaks, and acts—a young talent with magnificent potential as a pop star, who has successfully adapted to the new role of a film actor, cast by the script fifteen years before his birth, proving that even thirty-year-old clothes suit a perfect face, and that love, open to the wind, remains an eternal charm, regardless of time.

This young charmer shines amidst the unabashed parental presence of Aidan Gillen and Maria Doyle Kennedy, who play a vivid—though by no means leading—role in their child’s development, in contrast to Jack Reynor, who has the second-most significant role in this film, with the closing credits dedicated to “Brothers of the World,” highlighting the importance of support—the foundation for growth—toward which the older brother guides the younger one, without jealousy, investing in his happiness as if it were his own dream.

As usual, things are very complicated with girls, and Lucy Boynton only adds to the complexity, breaking the heart of her underage suitor, who overcomes the turmoil of all the elements, immersing himself in poetry and music, never giving up or backing down, no matter how desperate the outcome may seem, ready for anything—and in this, his courage comes to his rescue.

“To strive and seek, to find and not to yield”—a rallying cry from Alfred Tennyson’s timeless poem “Ulysses” in John Carney’s romantic and nostalgic adaptation, whose hero battles the system, seeks his place in the world, finds it, and does not back down in the face of any difficulties—which is precisely how he wins over a woman’s heart, one inclined to believe in the strength of words and resolve, realizing that the hero’s age is irrelevant here.

To our great delight, the director doesn’t overdo the “ideological” aspect, surrounding the rebellious protagonist with a cast of unforgettable characters who ensure a slightly edgy but generally optimistic (Conor himself calls himself a futurist) march toward the future—a journey that doesn’t overlook pleasant everyday “little things,” concert costumes that ironically mimic idols, the thrill of passion, and the courage of youth that knows no doubt in its friends.

Times change, crises come and go, mediocrity sets its own boundaries, but if you want to, nothing will stop you from stepping beyond those boundaries and defining your own personal style.
