Be perfect, study, work hard, conform to society—these labels hang over and haunt every person. Welton School seems to promise success, but in reality, it sells security at the cost of freedom. This is especially bitter because it is precisely in youth that a person should be free to try things and make mistakes, rather than conform to someone else’s standards.

The boys have created their own little island where they can be themselves. But fear still lives inside each of them: some take action, some silently watch the others, and for others, words seem to get stuck in their throats. Yes, there are those nearby who are willing to listen, and that means a lot. However, this support alone isn’t enough when an entire system is bearing down from the outside, demanding obedience and uniform responses. Neil’s tragedy isn’t that he dreamed of the stage, but that his dream had no right to exist without his father’s permission. At this point, the film becomes extremely harsh: freedom without the right to recognition turns out to be unbearable.

Let the world insist that you must be convenient, predictable, and “correct,” but don’t let it silence your voice. As long as you can write, feel, and create, your talent burns within you—and it doesn’t matter what others think. Rebel, shout—don’t let them break you. A dead man will never find freedom and will never be able to bring his passion to life. As long as there is even one feeling inside you that you want to express—you are free.
