Let's Spend the Night Together 4K 1982
Let's Spend the Night Together is a concert film capturing one of The Rolling Stones' most ambitious tours of North America in 1981. Directed by Hal Ashby, known for his auteur works, here he focuses on the live show rather than the documentary narrative. The viewer is immersed in the atmosphere of large arenas with dozens of cameras, huge screens, psychedelic projections, and powerful sound design.
The film focuses on the stage energy of Mick Jagger, who effectively becomes the main character of the film: his charisma, movements, and contact with the audience are the center of the whole spectacle. The program includes classics from the 60s and 70s (“Under My Thumb,” “Jumpin' Jack Flash,” “You Can't Always Get What You Want”) and more recent hits from the album Tattoo You (“Start Me Up,” “Shattered,” “Waiting on a Friend,” and the finale “(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction”). Footage from the stage is sometimes interspersed with short backstage moments, archival footage, and scenes of preparation for the performance, but this is secondary to the concert itself.

Let's Spend the Night Together is a concert, not a biographical film, and should be judged primarily as a live recording of the Rolling Stones' performance in the early 1980s. For fans, it is a valuable snapshot of the era of stadium shows: the stage, huge screens, psychedelic effects, and a host of hits that the band has played hundreds of times but still sound powerful.
Its strong point is Mick Jagger's charisma and his ability to “captivate” the audience: his movements, his play with the cameras, and the moments when he descends into the audience with a microphone create a real sense of presence. Musically, the film sometimes suffers from the fact that the scenes are too fast-paced and some of the songs sound like a “rehearsed” set, but for rock ‘n’ roll connoisseurs, it's still excellent museum material.
The film may seem simple and “superficial” to the average viewer who doesn't follow the band, but for Stones fans, it's a must-see. It's not as documentary-like as Gimme Shelter, but as a live concert, Let's Spend the Night Together perfectly captures the spirit of the 80s and the feeling that you were really there, in the arena.
