User Review
Canadian twins, brother and sister Simon and Jeanne Marval (Melissa Desorme-Poulain, Maxime Gaudette), are summoned to the reading of their mother's will. Her last request forces them to delve into her violent past.
In his adaptation of Wajdi Mouawad's play, which was a resounding theatrical success, director Denis Villeneuve turns the story into more than just a melodrama. Events take an increasingly gruesome turn after each new revelation, and the twins learn the truth about the dark past of their late mother in the notional Middle Eastern country of Fouad. Deftly alternating between flashbacks and detective scenes as the twins try to find their father, who they thought was dead, and a brother they never knew existed, Villeneuve not only creates thriller-worthy suspense, but also explores much more serious themes, such as the consequences of war and the cruelty of fate.
The performance of the actors is impressive, as is the camerawork of André Turpen, but the director achieves credibility through his restraint and rigor. The film won prizes at the Rotterdam and Toronto film festivals, and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film from Canada.
