Storyline
It's the early 1960s Montana. With no family as support besides her in-laws with who she lives, widowed Lorna Blackledge marries Donnie Weboy primarily to provide a father for her three year old son, Jimmy Blackledge. Lorna's first husband, James Blackledge, died in a horse riding accident. Shortly thereafter when Lorna, Donnie and Jimmy disappear into the night without a word, said in-laws, retired sheriff George Blackledge and horsewoman Margaret Blackledge, go on a search for them in Margaret knowing that Donnie is bad for Lorna and Jimmy in she having seen Donnie, without any sign of remorse, hit both of them and thus fearing not only for their safety but their lives. Thus, they also believe Lorna left against her will in fear for herself and Jimmy if she didn't obey. Margaret in particular is determined to bring Jimmy "home" to live with them with or without Lorna. They head to North Dakota in believing that's where Donnie's family lives. Beyond discovering that Donnie is only the tip of the iceberg in the control and violence exacted by the Weboys, how George and Margaret approach the situation, despite loving each other, is often at odds with each other in their different histories, George as former law enforcement, and Margaret as the nurturing mother, first to James and then to Jimmy.

The theme of family has always been relevant in any movie or TV series. Watching the family relationships and squabbles of the characters, you reflect on your own life experience to some extent, depending on what you see. Of course, a lot depends on what exactly the focus is on and how the material itself is presented. In my opinion, one of the most successful recent films in this regard is the dramatic thriller Blood Ties, based on the novel by Larry Watson.
Synopsis Retired sheriff George Blackledge and his wife Margaret lead a quiet, measured life on their ranch in the midst of the beautiful Montana mountains. They have already recovered from the tragic death of their only son three years ago and are channeling all their remaining love into raising their grandson Jimmy. But everything changes when their now ex-daughter-in-law Lorna marries a young man named Donnie Wiboy. One day Margaret accidentally notices Donnie beating Lorna and Jimmy with impunity, and a short time later Donnie takes them out of town to another state to live with his family. Determined to get her grandson, Margaret convinces George to go in search of Lorna and Jimmy, not realizing what a nightmare this trip will turn out to be for them.
The movie is characterized by a very strong cast, and we are talking about talented actors. Kevin Costner played the role of former sheriff George Blackledge, a man who combines iron will and character with gentle family kindness. Diane Lane, for whom, in my opinion, this role is one of the best in recent times, played the role of Margaret, a real keeper of the home, who, at first glance, could seem like a typical housewife and extremely meticulous grandmother, but in reality is a strong-willed woman, ready to fight not for life but for death for the sake of her family. Finally, it should be noted Leslie Manville, who played the role of Blanche Wiboy, the head of the Wiboy family, a man devoid of any moral framework and humanity, personifying purely ruthless evil.
Directing Although Thomas Bezuch does not have a long track record as a director, his work can still be appreciated. In the case of Blood Ties, the movie can be divided into two halves. The first half is a classic family drama about an elderly couple who have barely recovered from the tragic death of their only son, and all this remaining love they wanted to direct to their grandson, who reminded them of their boy. On the way to their grandson, they communicate with each other, meet new people, assess their situation and draw conclusions. But then the tone of the movie changes dramatically with the onset of the second half, when the movie turns into a tough criminal-psychological thriller, when the main characters are forced to leave all their reticences behind, because for the first time in their lives they are faced with a situation that poses a mortal danger to all its participants. But the heroes are not any elderly mumblers, but adequate people, who realize that just talking here will not do and will have to take up arms. Actually nice family conversations end up in a brutal bloodbath, in which not everyone will stay alive.
Script As you know, the movie is based on the novel by Larry Watson, adapted by the same Thomas Bezucha. The action takes place in the state of Montana in the early 1960s. Spouses Blackledge, former sheriff George and Margaret, keep a small ranch with their son James, his wife Lorna and their son Jimmy. Maragaret just loves her grandson, remembering how she once held little James in her arms as well. But there is grief: during a trip James falls from a horse and breaks his neck.
Three years pass, Margaret and George overcame the pain, although mental trauma in the form of memories of James periodically make themselves known. The only outlet is their grandson Jimmy, but he too is taken away when Lorna marries Donnie Wiboy. All would be nothing, the spouses are ready to accept it, because this is life, but one day on the way home Margaret once sees from the car, as at first glance harmless Donny cruelly and with impunity first hits a three-year-old boy for the fact that he accidentally dropped a ball of ice cream, and then with all his might hits Lorna, who stood up for his son. But things get worse when Donnie, Lorna and little Jimmy disappear without a trace. After learning that Donnie has taken them to his family, Margaret persuades George to go in search of them and take Jimmy for himself. Doubting the idea at first, George, realizing that nothing will stop his wife, agrees to the request and sends them on a long journey.
Then the story could have ended with banal family squabbles, if not for the Weeboi family, who keep the entire population, including the police, of Dakota County in check. From the very beginning it becomes clear that Lorna and Jimmy are in a death trap, from which it will not be so easy to get out, and that without bloodshed here will not do without. Agree, quite interesting, if not for one significant flaw, namely, the lack of history of the Wiboys themselves. That is, it remains a mystery, and at the expense of what this family enjoyed such a bad reputation, whether they were some local mafia, or just complete scumbags, will not be clear. Only one thing is clear - for the heroes this trip will turn into a real unforgettable nightmare.
Bottom line I don't know why the audience was so cool to the movie. Apparently, my opinion coincided with the opinion of movie critics. In my opinion, “Blood Ties” is a really worthy work. Although the movie has its shortcomings, which were mentioned above, still the movie attracts with its humanity and organic approach to solving problems. Therefore, without further ado, I simply recommend it for viewing.
