Screen adaptation of Shugoro Yamamoto's novel. Conditionally, this movie can be considered a sequel to “Bodyguard”. Still the same bawdy-looking samurai (Mifune is simply magnificent in this role), a lover of drink, but skillfully wielding a sword, now helps nine honest warriors of a provincial town to defeat corrupt villains, seeking power over the clan.

Unlike Yojinbo's masterpiece, this sequel does not bear the stamp of genius. Tsubaki Sanjuro is a sequel to Tsubaki Sanjuro, which largely repeats the plot moves I loved from the first film and allows the viewer to enjoy Mifune's performance as Sanjuro as much as possible.
In essence, I found the picture interesting only at the beginning and at the end. The beginning is interesting with the sudden appearance of Sanjuro and his introduction to a new clan unknown to him before. Almost immediately he takes the position of a sage and war tactician, charming his new acquaintances with his tactical foresight.
And the end will be remembered first of all by a short, but unusually spectacular fight with a fountain of blood. Tatsuya Nakadai again, as in the first movie, will perfectly cope with the role of antagonist for the protagonist.
However, the tape will be deprived of ironic notes and wonderful music by Masaru Sato. Or rather, all these elements will be present, but relatively in a very limited format. And the adventures of the hero seemed to me not too original - his intrigues become trivial and predictable.
By the way, the game itself Mifune did not surprise at all, the image of his hero became too straightforward. Mifune significantly increased the number of his 'signature' for Sanjuro shrugs and put on the mask of a serious man, ready to make hard and difficult decisions. Surprisingly enough, his performance seemed to me to be a logical preparation for another, more complex and serious role - Dr. Niide, nicknamed 'Red Beard'.
