It is a tedious and dull anti spectacle, 1.5 hours are perceived as 3. The movie is presented as realism about ultra-violence, but here it is not, all hard scenes are behind the scenes, we are only shown their results in the form of corpses lying in ketchup.
The main character has some kind of mental disorder with suicidal tendencies, which is constantly emphasized by the director. But it looks ridiculous, we are not explained the reasons for these seizures, it also has no effect on the plot. The hero is said to be 'ruthless'. Kill a couple or three nameless guards with a hammer off-screen, that's all ruthlessness.
The story doesn't play out in any way either. They just put before the fact that there are bad people in power who kidnap little girls for known purposes, no moral/ethical assessment of this is given in any way.
Not a single hero is not revealed, it is impossible to empathize with them, their fate is indifferent to the viewer. Dolls that flashed in the frame for 1 minute are dying, who cares?
Joaquin Phoenix walks around the whole movie with a stone face and gets the Palme d'Or for Best Actor. I don't understand something about that award.
The same can be said for the plot. Not a bad crime story stumbles and goes downhill on the director's inability to tell anything interesting.
What it was and why this boring not clear for whom and why filmed narrative gets anything but well-deserved criticism in its address, it is not clear to me.
This movie could have been a hard-hitting action movie in the spirit of John Wick, where a professional killer deals with his enemies in a brutal manner, but there is not even that here. You could add to that the fact that he's a 'psycho' and add emotion and real ruthlessness. This doesn't even smell like that.
