User Review
Ichi has had a lot of bad luck in his life. As a child, he was an outcast and a whipping boy, and humiliation was the whole meaning of his existence. But, as we know, children grow up and Ichi grew up to become a dangerous and unpredictable psychopath, on whose path it is better not to meet anyone. Yakuza boss Kakihara has heard a lot about Ichi, but there's no way he'll be ready for a bloody encounter with a psychopathic killer.
Takashi Miike's 'Ichi the Killer' is one of the cult Japanese director's most scandalous works. The picture, based on the Japanese comic book of the same name, is shot in a shocking, albeit typical of the director's original thrash style. However, the director vividly showing violence on the screen, exposes the whole essence of human nature, prone to deviancy on a subconscious level.
Extremely unusual work of cameraman Hideo Yamomoto in the movie. The scenes of violence in the film are deliberately exaggerated, and the video sequence itself balances from static to psychedelic, thus allowing the viewer to penetrate Ichi's wounded mind. However, despite the radical visuals, the film is not without irony, a wicked and provocative irony that permeates the entire movie, irony over Ichi's victims and Ichi himself, who has become a product of his society. At some points, the movie looks like a black and very violent comedy with an implicit moral.
The soundtrack by Seiichi Yamamoto and Karera Musication creates a particularly creepy and strange atmosphere in the movie.
'Ichi Killer' is definitely not a movie for all audiences. Many people will be repulsed by the abundance of violent and unpleasant scenes, but if you are a fan of Asian horror movies and Takashi Miike's work, I recommend you not to miss this movie.
