Night Moves 4K 1975 Ultra HD 2160p
This decidedly underwhelming psychological thriller tells how L.A. detective Hackman forgets his marital woes for a while in order to find a runaway nymphet (a charming role by Griffith). He follows her to California, where the complex action unfolds, leading to a stunning finale. Filmed in California and Florida, the movie is acutely watchable, beautiful actors, but you feel disappointed after the movie.

The wave of American neo-noirs in the early seventies gave birth to several milestone and significant films. Before Arthur Penn, Alan J. Pakula, Robert Altman, Francis Ford Coppola and Roman Polanski had their say. Less titled and venerable directors like Joseph Sargent or Stuart Rosenberg have also made their mark. But perhaps the last, truly significant event of this wave was the tape of the creator of “Bonnie and Clyde” and “Little Big Man”.
Based on a clever script by Alan Sharp, the thriller “Night Moves” (1975) did not become a cinematic milestone of the level of “Chinatown” (1974), but its niche occupied, undoubtedly. Quite comparable, and in some ways even superior to such works as “Klute” (1971) or “The Long Goodbye” (1973), the picture still impresses with its evil atmosphere of the rotten part of American society. And almost tragically, the hero Harry Mosby - a former soccer player and now a detective, trying to get away from problems with his wife and work, experiencing a midlife crisis and facing a confusing and complex case, the denouement of which will be fatal.
Combining the true hopelessness of the “black movie”, complex, intricate plot, coupled with excellent work of the actors, as well as saturated with social, and partly even philosophical subtext, Penn's opus, is, above all, a parable about the collision of man with the abyss. Moreover, the abyss here is not only in allegorical meaning, but also in direct meaning, it is enough to remember the last quarter of the picture.
Alas, this work of the director did not enjoy success at the box office, and the critics accepted it rather reservedly, although many noted its expressiveness and skill. But still the status of an “instant classic” in contrast to his “Miracle Maker” (1962) or the already mentioned story about a couple of gangsters-lovers, “Night Moves” did not earn. For a long time remained in the shadows, “misunderstood masterpiece”, only relatively recently has been reviewed, and in general, has come to be regarded as one of the most successful, from an artistic point of view, the director's work.
Filmed tape quite standard, according to all the canons and in the best traditions of Hollywood thriller of his time. Penn is guessed only thanks to a somewhat jagged editing (as an editor once again acted Dede Allen, with whom made the best works of the master). The director here is interested, first of all, not in the form, but in the content, which, together with the gloomy atmosphere, produces the proper effect. We should also mention the music by Michael Small and the brilliant performance of his role by Gene Hackman, who had already made a name for himself in The French Connection (1971) - another example of a wonderful neo-noir, which, however, was centered on the story of a policeman, but not a private detective.
