After the tragedy of the World Trade Center, hope is still alive. Refusing to bow down to terrorism, rescue workers and the families of victims continue their mission. They believe that beneath every piece of rubble could be their colleague, friend, or family member. This is the true story of John McLoughlin and William Jimeno, the last two survivors to be pulled from the rubble of the World Trade Center. It is also the story of people who never give up. This is the story of real heroes at a fateful time for the United States, when buildings collapsed and heroes literally rose from the ashes to give hope to all of humanity...

I sincerely do not understand those who say that this film by Oliver Stone is a hotbed of pathos and pretentious heroism. World Trade Center is not about a terrorist attack in cinema, but about the people whose lives were affected by that attack. Oliver Stone focuses precisely on the individuals for whom that day was a turning point in their lives. I also don't quite understand why this film has been classified as “fantasy” on the Kinopoisk website. It's not fantasy, it's not even close to science fiction!

Like some other films based on real events or describing some kind of tragedy (critical situation), the film begins by introducing the viewer to several characters who will be followed throughout the plot. Thus, we meet police officers John McLaughlin (Nicolas Cage) and Will Jimeno (Michael Peña), as well as their wives and some of their colleagues. The morning briefing ends and the police officers go out to patrol the streets. After a while, a huge shadow of an airplane flies by at a very low altitude, and it becomes clear that something has happened. Stone did without colossal scenes of destruction, without an episode in which planes ram into the World Trade Center buildings (and most likely the film's haters were indignant about this, after all, the very name “World Trade Center” hinted that this would be a real disaster movie, but in the end it all boiled down to “some people under the rubble”!)

And in fact, “delving into the characters” is much more effective than focusing on the disaster, as it brings human life and its value to the forefront. I agree that the two hours of the film drag on quite a bit, especially considering that there is little room to maneuver under the rubble and not much happens there. But then again, Oliver Stone did not originally conceive this film as a full-scale disaster movie. Moreover, he belongs to that category of directors who, when they make a film based on real events, approach the task with the utmost care and responsibility.

It is understandable that when the story is about people, it is difficult to single out a key figure from among the thousands of dead and injured to focus on. How can one talk about the hypothetical death of a mother of three children when there were other victims whose deaths were a terrible blow to their families? Stone found a way out of the situation where he could tell the story of the people and at the same time show specific examples. Thus, police officers McLaughlin and Jimeno, who were among the last to be pulled from the rubble of the World Trade Center, were chosen as the main characters. According to the credits after the film, a total of 20 people were pulled alive from the rubble, and the heroes played by Cage and Peña were the 18th and 19th to be rescued. Some were rescued after them, but these two became a symbol of hope that the search in the ruins must continue until the very last moment, even when all hope is lost.

John C. McGinley, William Mapother, Danny Nucci, Viola Davis, David Boston, Nicolas Turturro, Jon Bernthal, Michael Shannon, Stephen Dorff, Jay Hernandez, Maria Bello, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Michael Peña, and Nicolas Cage — Twin Towers has a decent cast, with many of the above actors and actresses appearing only in cameos or supporting roles. However, each of them agreed to make a small appearance in a film dedicated to law enforcement officers and rescue workers, whose work is reflected here.

The film itself is not bad. It is capable of evoking emotions and feelings in viewers, especially since the September 11 terrorist attacks were one of the most horrific episodes in modern human history. Many films have been made on this subject, including not only World Trade Center, but also Remember Me, Flight 9/11, and The Walk with Joseph Gordon-Levitt (although it is not about the terrorist attack, but about the World Trade Center buildings)..
