Storyline
Mizushima is a soldier in the Japanese army in Burma in World War II. He's a good soldier and frequently plays his harp to entertain his fellow soldiers. When the war comes to an end, he is asked by the British to go into the mountains to try and convince a Japanese troop to surrender. Given only 30 minutes to convince them, Mizushima is unsuccessful - they would rather die with honor - and the British attack. Deeply affected by what has happened, he becomes a Buddhist monk, traveling the countryside burying the remains of Japanese soldiers. He is unable however to rejoin his brothers-in-arms.

User Review

There are bad movies that are not worth watching at all (like 'Mamma Mia!' ), there are very good movies that you don't have to worry about if you haven't seen them in your lifetime (such as Dogville or Saving Private Ryan), and there are films that may not be as famous as The Shawshank Redemption, but unlike Darabont's film, everyone “must” see them! Such as this film by Kon Itakawa.

The Japanese director's pacifist elegy about a “choir platoon” and a “harpist monk” is filled with spiritual wisdom and Eastern flavor. The Burmese Harp, filmed against the backdrop of majestic pagodas and beautiful mountain valleys, is not only a magnificent war drama, but also a picturesque work of art, albeit in monochrome black and white film (although there are rumors that a color version of this film exists). It is a rare example of cinema where laconicism and grandiloquence complement each other and intertwine in such an exceptional symbiosis.

World War II is a daily struggle with death, and each of the heroes strives simply to live out the last days of the great slaughter. The war ends for each of them only when their own heart, having measured out its time, says “stop.” Music becomes a symbol of peace in this film. The hero's consciousness, scarred by war syndrome, is cleansed by Buddhism. Divine light dispels the smoke of guns, and the soldier's soul finds its way to itself, to a simple, pure existence.

Post-war Japan is a country that has lost faith in the emperor, a country without its god, but Private Mizushima finds God within himself. Revenge, so familiar to the East, becomes as meaningless as it can possibly be for the first time. His comrades do not understand their fellow soldier, just as the naive, practical West does not understand the sacrificial nature of the East. After all, in the end, both war and peace are merely states of mind.
