User Review
This film is a good opportunity to look at crime in South Korea from a different angle, one that is more realistic and detailed. Based on the period from 1982 to the present day and the events taking place in South Korea at that time, the plot is fictional. But it is by no means devoid of logic and truthfulness. Unlike many crime thrillers where two friends, brothers, climb the criminal ladder together, here the main character, who already has a family and a job as a customs officer at the port, accidentally gets involved in this dangerous world. He gradually turns into a real gangster, cunning and cruel.
Times change, as do people, who seem to adapt to their new environment, getting used to the new ‘system’ and finding loopholes and flaws that they can use to their advantage. The old gangsters are tightly woven into the country's politics, and brute force is no longer an argument. The strong become weak, and the most cunning survive. Those who are better at adapting to the new system, which, like everything else, is constantly changing.
Min-sik Choi's magnificent performance complements this already good film. And to this actor's best films, such as Oldboy and I Saw the Devil, we can now add The Nameless Gangster.
