User Review

First, we need to analyze the title to understand the theme. “One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest” refers to a mental hospital. It also refers to a passage from a children's counting rhyme about a goose that flew neither west nor east, but over the cuckoo's nest, signifying a third way and freedom of choice, which later becomes the cornerstone of the film itself.

The film itself is an adaptation of Ken Kesey's book of the same name. It is worth noting that the film and the book are different, and some people dislike the film adaptation because of this. However, I will only refer to the film as a separate work. I still plan to read the book in the future. An interesting fact: this book was written under the influence of several psychedelics by a man who was a victim of a CIA experiment in his youth. Now let's move on to the film itself.

In short, the plot tells the story of a man who wants to avoid serving his sentence and doing community service by checking himself into a mental hospital. However, the fact that he is sane does not repel the other patients, but rather brings them closer together. He is an open and free person who infects others with this attitude, revealing a new side to them. The script makes us think about who we consider mentally ill and whether they really are. A subtle thread runs through the film, conveying a message of humanity, life, and freedom, literally bringing together two worlds: the confined and the free. It is the third way from the beginning, which is not something “for” or “against,” but simply different. Everything is opposed to the suppression of will, which emerges as the main antagonist. In the end, everyone draws their own conclusions about victory or defeat in the face of the system.

The cast and their performances were the perfect complement to the plot and, ultimately, the best part of the film. More than ten unique characters were played in an extremely naturalistic and meticulous manner, so much so that at times you forget that you are watching a movie and not a documentary. Some of the patients in the crowd were real, as the film was shot in an actual mental hospital. All the actors maintain the tone and pace of the plot, revealing more and more of its deeper aspects as the film progresses. It is no coincidence that this film won five Oscars.

The work of the cinematographer and composer also complements the picture created by the director. Perfectly chosen angles and color schemes, which non-verbally reveal the essence of the characters, combined with a soundtrack that fills in many gaps and subconsciously “colors” the situations, create a unique atmosphere.

Despite all its undeniable strengths, the film is not perfect. Not all things and ideas are fully revealed, as are some of the characters. In places, the illogicality of certain events that arise to advance the plot is not hidden. Fortunately, the linear narrative is competently connected. Psychology enthusiasts may enjoy it even more.
